Google Toolbar - updated without approval!

My Google Toolbar for IE auto-updated without prompting me. Since I primarily use FF now, I just noticed this – the icons look better and there are new features/options. While I appreciate the fact that I now have a newer version, I am a little piqued that it did not prompt me first. Not sure if the error was on the Google side or the IE side – my money is on the former.
I accidently launched IE yesterday (yes I'm still using the piece of crap called FireFox) and noticed that the Google toolbar looked different. I assumed it was just my poor memory. Yes, this happened to me too. However, I thought it was standard behaviour for the Google toolbar to auto-update? I don't know whether it's customisable but mine has auto-updated in the past too. But I've definitely read on the Google site that it auto-updates. I don't mind provided that it doesn't introduce instability issues. (However, my IE is already unstable for other reasons.) Like you I use FF as my primary browser. I'm also using the recently-released Google toolbar for it. I assume that in this case it won't auto-update, unless FF allows it? Kevin

Hi, But have you read EULA, it "may" mention that upgrades would happen automatically. And while installing if you checked "I Aggree", then better stop calling names at Google. :) Anyways, I love Microsoft as well as Google, as well as Apple, .. any good company for that matter who has made our life a little simpler. So definitely I don;t see it as evil, I just think that they have saved you an extra click & question "Do you want to update?"

Some notification that an update was going to be performed would have been welcomed. In the privacy policy of Google Toolbar[^] it mentions "Periodically, the Google Toolbar contacts our servers to see if you are running the most current version. If necessary, we will automatically provide you with the latest update to the Google Toolbar." The link to the Privacy Policy is on the Choose Your Configuration window of the install which talks about the advanced features. It lets you enable or disable them. It does not specifically mention if this enabling/disabling pertains to the auto-update but it may as that above paragraph is in the Privacy Policy which is what that window is all about. Di you enable advanced features? Anyway, it is mentioned if you are one of the 0.000001% of people who read terms and privacy policies. I noticed this first at work and thought someone must have done it for some reason, then I come home and find it I was a little ticked off. I may just send it down stream, I have IE 7 which has a search bar (with google on it) and a popup blocker. Thats all I was using google for. Matt Newman

Of course there is the idea that someone is loading software into your computer without your knowledge, but then there is the fact that you really do not have a clue if their update will function or just crash your browser or cause other problems on your system. There is always the other problem though, if Google has the code built in to automatically load sofware without your approval, it may be able to be hijacked and used to hack your machine. IIRC, there was a problem with the Netscape download manager a few years ago that opened your system to exploits. Personally, I do not think that anyone should be allowed to automatically update anything on your machine until you have clearly given them the approval to do so. If it is in the EULA, then most people will not know it as most people do not bother reading them. Rocky <>< My Blog[^]

Secondly, it has major stability issues when using multi-media such as WMA or Real. I get a least a couple of lock-ups a week. Overall it does the job but it lacks the polish of most commercial software. The competition with Microsoft will guarantee us that both FF and IE will become better products.
