Well, the Pope is clueless. What else is new? At least the Catholics will be able to get laid a little more. "People who never make mistakes, never do anything." My Blog

Too bad he wasn't talking to Catholic priests. It seems to me the idea of priestly celibacy (which was introduced by the Church for selfish reasons in the Middle Ages, by the way) is a major factor in the rampant sexual abuses taking place today.

Boy, that'd be a fun one. Us Jews just can't wait for another Jihad or Crusade, we're always treated so royally when those things come around! ;)

I disagree that the celibacy -- per se -- is a major factor in the sexual abuses going on. I think that the celibacy attracted a certain type of individual, i.e homosexuals to the priesthood. Why? Because they didn't want to get married to a woman and they couldn't legally get married to a man. So it was live in "sin" with a man or enter the priesthood. Many chose to enter the priesthood, but they still had homosexual desires. Unfortunately, their position put them in close contact with altar boys. That was like mixing fire and oil, so to speak. So there you have it.

That might be part of it; certainly closet homosexuals could be attracted to the priesthood in a predatory way possibly, but more likely in a way of attempting to get out of their lifestyle in the hopes of being godly. The fact that most of these abuses are man-on-boy, I believe, is due largely to accessibility. Altar boys are there, in constant contact with priests, who are sexually starved. I'd bet that if there were altar girls as there are altar boys, the sexual abuse would be spread out among both genders. Of course, at an early age, gender isn't as pronounced, so there may even be cases of abuse where the priest isn't necessarily homosexual. Sexually starved humans + easy, full one-on-one access to children is a recipe for sexual abuse, no matter who you are. I believe if they'd let priests marry, things would improve and you'd see a visible number of abuse cases go down over time.

Well... If you look at the total population count then this statement might seem ignorant. However I read a study that suggested places like the UK will be in trouble soon. The article states that women are waiting until later in their life to have children, late 30's and sometimes 40's. This is going to create a huge generation gap in the society. The gap will need to be filled with people moving into the area from other nations. There are also similar studies in the US. We are getting to the point where there might be more people that do not have kids, then one's that do. It probably won't affect you and I, but in the generations to come there might be a problem. Not that I agree with everything, if anything, the pope says. Just thought I would talk about the reason why having more babies would be good, instead of just demanding it. - Drew

Ease burdoned infrastructures, lower water consumption (which is so high above water cycle rations that we are all running out of water), we might be able to feed the people we have, etc. There are some good reasons to reduce rather than grow. I don't see reducing the number of generations in a lifetime as a problem, but a benefit. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I think that show would've been in poor taste with the recent death of John Paul II.

Well, i'm not terribly concerned about overpopulation. But this is sketchy at least. So yeah, Catholics are ignoring bans on birth control for whatever reasons, and this is resulting in lower birth rates. So, instead of telling them "hey, sinners, knock it off", he hits them with an appeal to... national pride?! :wtf: You know, i've generally thought the German Pope jokes in poor taste, but if someone wants to make a good "Preserve the Master Race" joke about this one, i'll laugh.

Ahem. At least in most American parishes, there are more female servers than there are male servers. Please note that the term 'altar boy' or 'altar girl' has only been used by the media since the late 80's.

Shog9 wrote: Eh? Really? Basically water exists in two forms, fresh and salt as we all know. Most of the water is in Salt water form which is expensive to draw water from. Fresh water is replenished through a regular cycle of evaporation, condensation, etc. However, that system is not a "constant" it rises and falls based on a huge number of factors, solar heat, quick evaporative water (watering your lawn in the day) or long term evaportive systems (underground or ocean water). The human population requires continually more water as the populations have risen over the thousands of years. Although we remove competition for water by deforestation and animal extinction, the population still grows faster than we can remove the competition for land resource. Thus we eventually had to start building "up", human population per square foot grows to huge figures in some areas. So we have to drill deeper and deeper for water because the surface water cannot be replenished fast enough. Drought doesn't help, because although the water cycle is reduced, demand is still increasing, making water less available. Water is a renewable resource, but through some uses of the water it can affect how long before that water is recycled to the fresh surface water. The Rio Grande has not reached the gulf for four years, and even with Colorado, NM and texas slowly coming out of drought, chances are it will never reach the gulf of mexico again. The entire volume of water will be used from now until the population reduces itself.... In drought areas cities are having to fight over who gets the most pressure on water ratios. States even suing each other over how much water should be sent downstream, even when the water isn't available to send. Even when the drought ends, demand simply increases to match, then doesn't let up when drought returns. It's kind of like paying your credit cards with other credit cards. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau.
