IS LAUREN A BIGOT?

Is idiot a name? Not that I am, but would I be name calling if I were to call you that? Or would it be considered "factual"? ;P
khorjak wrote: Is idiot a name?
A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a medical classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive. [Middle English, ignorant person, from Old French idiote, from Latin idita, from Greek idits, private person, layman, from idios, own, private. See s(w)e- in Indo-European Roots.]
It is interesting to note that its use as a slang term, deliberately to be offensive changed a medical classification system to drop the use of the term. For all the complaints of PC movement now, it has been happening as part of our language since the invention of language. The original term means a private person, someone who is incapable of learning to deal with a larger world, or a person with autism which would be trapped in a private world, and was an appropriate descriptive term until it was used as an insult. An idiot savant was not an oxymoron until the adoption of slang it was a person with gifted computational capability, an enherant rather than learned ability, yet without the capability of learning social/interactive or any other skills already in possession past the equivalent age of 3. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I never said she can't have an opinion different than mine. Not that she needs my permission, but she can have and hold whatever opinions she wants to. But, if she, or anyone else for that matter, chooses to espouse those opinions, then it is incumbent upon that opinion holder/espouser to be able defend such opinions with thoughful, reasoned arguments. When opinions are made such that an entire class of people are denigrated, then that is not just an opinion, it becomes a stereotype. If someone were to say "green people are lazy" that certainly is an opionion, but it also makes that person a bigot when they hold to an opinion that is so easily disproved. So it is with lauren, she holds that religion causes bad stuff and posts a link of dubious quality to support such a dubious "opinion." When it is pointed out that the article she posted linked to is of poor quality she goes on the offensive and rather than apologize she attacks the individual.

I have never got the impression that Lauren has trouble defending her position. I believe her that in this case, she thought the link was funny. Just because it isn't to you ( or me ), doesn't mean it wasn't to her. Why not just take her at her word, instead of making yourself look bad with this carry on ? ahz wrote: People cause bad stuff and often hide behind their religion to justify it. Christian Graus wrote: The Crusades, the KKK, Nazi Germany, child abuse by clery, Without going into this Laureen discussion, what religion caused Nazi Germany? Nazi means national socialism and they were driven by nationalism, not any religion. In fact, they were often quoting Darwin theory as a justification for their actions.

no, lauren is not a bigot, but you're most definitely an idiot... ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. Ummm... no? Perhaps a better question you should ask yourself is: "Why am I obsessed with Lauren?" Seriously - think about it. The nature of your post isn't just to vent a frustration - it is specifically to solicit other people to express ill-will toward an individual. It's not enough for you to feel negatively toward Lauren - you want other people to feel negatively about her too. Why? Even if you had a beef with someone, why would you want to solicit others to share in your negative experience? What good does that do for you? I'm not surprised by the response you've gotten. I think many would read your post and wonder more "What's this guy's problem?" rather than "Wow, that person he attacked is really a bigot."

Go find a definition of "bigot". An opinion, by it's very nature, cannot be proven or disproven in any sense of either term. An opinion is how someone feels about something, and may or may not be based on fact, experience, idea, intellect, or any other method by which they arrived at said opinion. A bigot is not simply someone that has an opinion which is wildly different from your own. I swear, the number of users that are registered here has significantly reduced the average IQ of the group as a whole. Final point, dipshit - her post was in the soapbox, and you posting this crap in the lounge qualifies as stepping solidly on your dick. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. Thank you for your well said and well thought-out post. It actually wasn't my intent to solicit negative input toward lauren. Rather, I wanted someone to defend her and her point of view. I have yet to see any post that successfully does so. Only attacks. But you have a good point. It was a wrong way to go about it. I sincerely apologize to you and everyone else and especially to lauren.

I don't agree that it's just her opinion. Name-calling is not an opinion. It's bigotry. And calling someone a bigot is not name calling. It's factual.
Not necessarily. As a Transsexual Christian I know more about bigotry and intolerance in religion than many people, and what I saw was ill thought out opinionated remarks. Not bigotry by a long way. You both should also have posted in the Soapbox. This isn't the place. :rose: Anna :rose: Riverblade Ltd - Software Consultancy Services Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up. It didn't work.
