These names are reserved in all versions of Windows. Although you may not experience a problem when you install SMS and designate these site codes, you may experience problems later. For example, you may not be able to successfully install legacy clients or to correctly set up SMS 2.0 logon points because some folders cannot be correctly created.

Nobody at Microsoft could answer this problem? Yeah, right! Anyone who knows DOS/Unix/CPM can! Like in a previous post, you can't create a file or folder using an existing device name. You can't create LPT_x_, COM_x_, CON, ... Same is true for xx_IX systems too, I think. CON is the device name for the Console. Try this: Open a CMD prompt. Type COPY CON TEST.TXT. The cursor will appear on a blank line, so type a bunch of garbage, ENTER will go to the next line. When done, hit F6 then ENTER. You'll find a file in the current folder called TEST.TXT. You might want to open it in Notepad to see what's inside. I would imagine the reason that you can't have a username of CON or any of the other device names is due to the profile path, which includes the username (C:\Documents and Settings\_username_\...). Amazing how those little bits of MS-DOS keep hanging on .

I would image that the same limitations exist under CPM and Unix too. The device names are pretty standard acrossed the board. RageInTheMachine9532 "...a pungent, ghastly, stinky piece of cheese!" -- The Roaming Gnome
