My office does this same exact thing. What people like you and the business execs making the above decisions need to understand is that people need break time - to clear thier minds, to work out a concept in thier heads, etc. Also: just because it doesn't look like work to you doesn't mean it isn't work. I found that I was being rather unproductive in the office with the restrictions in place. Neat how they made those restrictions to increase productivity, but for me at least, it reduced my ability to produce. Now I work at home most days, and I'm as productive as I was before; with even MORE distractions than I previously had in the office. (It was fortunate that things turned out this way; otherwise, I would have searched for other employment. Money is not everything.)

Ok. Here is a suggestion. MSN Messenger uses the MSNP9 protocol which works over both TCP and HTTP connections. I assume that your company has not blocked HTTP so that option is open to you. When you have no *work* to do for your employer, fire up your IDE and start working on a plugin for that IDE that uses the MSNP9 protocol to talk to the MSN network. That way you can chat to people from inside your IDE. If you use Visual Studio I suggest that you make a plugin that looks and behaves like the immediate command window so that you can pretend you are debugging and running commands there while you are actually chatting away to your contacts. Here is some info on the MSNP9 protocol to get you started: http://www.hypothetic.org/docs/msn/research/msnp9.php[^] If on the other hand you are talking about Windows Messenger then that uses the SIP protocol and there are plenty of free implementations of that out there. Either way, it is only a few days work to get everything working and when you are finished you can post an article here about it. Regards, Brian Dela :-) Blog^ Co-author of The Outlook Answer Book... Yes. And a human is very productive if having to work every single hour for 8-9-10 hours when at work. People need breaks to clear their minds. If I put in 8-10 hours a day, then I danged well expect to be able to take a breather either by surfing some or doing something else. And by the way - IM programs really can have relevant workusage as well. --------------------------- 127.0.0.1 - Sweet 127.0.0.1

Everyone is entitled to a break but the better way to refresh yourself is to take a break from your computer.

Hmm. Then you go and find some or you take a break and do something else. There are reasons why things like MSN messenger are removed. Some people have probably abused the privilege in the past and this has caused there work to suffer and now everybody is paying the price. If you don't like having it taken away, then speak to your manager. If you can justify having it, then a good manager will show a little leeway. If you are still unhappy, perhaps you need to find another job where you have more freedom. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

Wrong. All of your time at work is your employer's, and there is never "nothing to do." If you're fortunate enough to work for someone who lets you chat online, you're lucky. But don't let yourself start thinking it's a right.
