Which version of XP? Home or Pro? I assume you are running SP2. I used to have problems prior to SP2 on Pro with certain external devices, which I put down to faulty drivers. I guess you'll have done a Google Groups search for the specific hardware to see if anybody else has seen the same problems with XP. I usually find it a good source of information. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]
yeah ... and yeah i did all the searches and stuff ... if the problem was reliable (ie, always did x or always did y) then i could deal with it but some days its fine and others it completely barfs out never on other operating systems tho

ok so ive decided that windows actually sucks when it comes to firewire devices ... seriously ... it locks up ... it cant see them ... it cant see shares ... it cant write to them ... all of the above happen randomly for no apparent reason yet on other days they work fine with my gf's mac i never have a problem ... with the same hardware running L**** i never have a problem ... just xp why cant they get it right? [edit] oh and for all the fanboys... f*** off [/edit]

{biz stuff} {about me} -- modified at 15:01 Sunday 23rd October, 2005I hate to say this, but... Don't buy another external harddrive unless it supports USB2. If it supports both Firewire *and* USB2, so much the better - but insist on that USB2 support. Let's face it - no matter what the relative advantages / disadvantages are, the industry always standardizes eventually, and what USB2 lacks in efficiency (in terms of software hand-holding), it more than makes up for in ease of implementation (hardware) and flexibility (hardware and software). It'll be the only game in town before long (well, except for SATA).

{biz stuff} {about me} -- modified at 15:01 Sunday 23rd October, 2005Have you updated the firmware? Your reference to LaCie implies its a LaCie drive. If so, see http://www.lacie.com/download/drivers/ReadMeFW800SP2.pdf[^] If you're just letting off steam, that's fine. If you want some help, you might have more luck if you tell us what computer (make, type of FireWire etc) and FireWire drive you're using.

:-D You love to stir it up don’t you. I had a similar problem with a Maxtor 300 GB firewire drive. It worked fine on my HP laptop & pair of homemade PCs and my Mac Mini. However, the thing just would not function with the new crappy Dell system that we bought. All of the PC systems were running Win XP (SP2) Pro. I tried updating the BIOS on the Dell & reinstalling all drivers and devices. Once that failed I dropped the crappy pre-installed disk image from Dell and reinstalled the OS. But the sorry Dell system just could not be forced to recognize the drive. I sat through hours of tech support calls with the *people* at Dell, and even forced them to honor their service plan and come out to work and "repair" the system. Two new main boards later I gave up and I am still fighting to get Dell to issue me a refund for their poor excuse for a PC. Sorry, I can’t really help. I just wanted to let you know that you aren’t the only one experiencing this type of issue. Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. Why are you dressed like that? - Jack Burton

At a guess, because no motherboard that I know of comes with firewire, it's still not mainstream in the windows world. And I'd hazard a guess that the problem is more the firewire driver for your card than Windows itself.
