Here's an interesting but little known fact that might help you out. On my Toshiba laptop the USB 2.0 ports will not show up as USB 2.0 ports. They only show up as 1.1 ports (after I reload and install SP 2) until after I go into the Device Manager and delete them. Once I delete them I restart as prompted then Windows XP detects, reinstalls and voila they show up as proper USB 2.0 ports. I've never tried this with a Firewire port so I don't know if it will help or not. - Rex

Maybe you have the same problem I had when trying to connect my camcorder to my laptop. It just wouldn't see it, while it did on my other PC. As it seems, with SP2, Microsoft changed the Firewire software to operate always on S100, the lowest speed, what my camcorder obviously didn't support. After downloading this patch[^] everything worked ok. Also make sure your firewire ports aren't firewalled. Arjan

It probably isn't Windows sucking, but the firewire driver. If you even installed it properly. ;P I've used several firewire devices for years on XP with no problems at all. Of course, firewire is pretty much obsolete these days, isn't it? Matt Gerrans

It's a proven fact that Firewire storage devices run faster than USB stuff... Obsolete? I think not. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. If you're not here to race, go the hell home - don't come here and grumble about going too fast. Have you updated the firmware? Your reference to LaCie implies its a LaCie drive. If so, see http://www.lacie.com/download/drivers/ReadMeFW800SP2.pdf[^] If you're just letting off steam, that's fine. If you want some help, you might have more luck if you tell us what computer (make, type of FireWire etc) and FireWire drive you're using.

I don't recall her asking for help. She's blowing off steam, and she's well within her rights to do so. Her mistake was thinking people would understand her frustration with Windows XP choking and puking on a standard firewire device. Nobody read (or comprehended) her original post, which has been a rampant problem here since membership numbers creeped up over 5000. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. At a guess, because no motherboard that I know of comes with firewire, it's still not mainstream in the windows world. And I'd hazard a guess that the problem is more the firewire driver for your card than Windows itself.

Gee Christian, you should really do some research. Well, I am the last person to be politically-correct.  But being someone that has worked with handicapped children before (in varying degrees of severity), I can honestly say - that is just plain wrong.    The child in that picture looks like he has Trisomy 21 (T21).  And it is generally hard to descern mental retardation from a photo alone.    Peace! -=- James
