I cannot believe they (Sony) have gone ahead with this. It's nuts, and out and out destructive to the end user! And what's worse is it's completely "fake" protection! If I put the CD into a Mac it works just fine - I can rip it to my hearts content!!!! Check out this FAQ[^]
From the Sony/BMG FAQ
6. I have heard that the protection software is really malware/spyware. Could this be true? [snipped] 1. I have an Apple Macintosh computer. Will the disc work on my MAC? Yes. This disc will behave like a traditional CD in a Mac.
OK, hmmm :) Well Happy, happy fun joy! Here's another interesting link: http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2005/10/drm_crippled_cd.html[^] This alleges that the whole thing is nothing but a pissing contest between Sony and Apple of the success of the iPod and iTMS. Gak! No wonder people have a low opinion of corporations and executives! ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned Save an Orange - Use the VCF!

Yep, nasty stuuf. I assume having the auto-run feature on CD's disables this? Are there any tools out there to block this thing from the word go? Personal firewalls ask if you want to allow outbound access, why not always ask if you want to run something from th CD drive? Pretty insidious. -- modified at 15:21 Wednesday 2nd November, 2005 YES, IT DUPLICATED ITSELF. So I deleted it. This site its ALMOST as slow as MSDN. ;P

Why can't you believe it? Sony have been at the forefront of puhsing crippled audio CDs for more than half a decade now. Where Sony/BMG goes, the others will follow. Count yourself lucky living in the States, this side of the Atlantic it is virtually impossible to get an album released under their label that isn't crippled. I bet they haven't been so quick to push them over there purely because of the sue-happy environment you live in.

Really? I guess I haven't paid much attention because I so rarely buy CD's (I Van Halen's 1984 a few months ago and that was the first purchase in almost 8 years). But still, this just seems insanely crazy. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! It is crazy, and totally pointless. It only takes one person out of the 2 million people that buy any one album to share it and it's on computers in 160 different countries by the end of the day, and a hit ringtone by the weekend. With the availability of digital sampling/recording equipment that connects to your PC nowadays, DRM doesn't do squat to prevent piracy.

Well if I understand things correctly you don;t have to install the software - it pops up some silly EULA. The kernel patch stunt is just completely over the top though. What I don't get is that they claim that the music will play normally on a Mac, but on a PC, without the software installed it "will result in distorted sound." How can this be? This sounds like bullshit to me. If they haven't installed any software, what would "distort" the sound on PC that wouldn't on a Mac? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Yep. You know, I've always thought the whole Napster/file sharing thing was wrong, it's copyright infringement no matter how you cut it. But with this new stunt from Sony, I wouldn't have any sympathy for Sony if someone publishes this shit out there from the DRM'd discs. Serves them right for being such dolts in the first place. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! Most audio CD DRM techniques involve encoding the data on the disc twice. Once as normal audio tracks which play in CD players, car stereos, and Macs, and once as a data track which is read by CD-ROW drives. They could be encrypting the data on the data track and using their player to decode it correctly. (Just a guess.)

But Mac's use the same CD/DVD hardware that a PC uses! So how does that work? Does the Mac OS just deal with the hardware differently? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Nope, definitely not. I personally think they are flat out lying, and simply hoping that people will see this in the FAQ, and assume it's true. I'm willing to bet that it's complete bullshit. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! I've run across these CD's already. 1 - Hold the shift key down when inserting the CD. Wait until windows has gone through it's autodetect routine. or Turn off autorun. 2 - Rip and burn to your heart's content. Legal purposes only of course. -Sean ---- Shag a Lizard
