You know the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? I think there should be a corallary - "if it's impossible to fix, don't bother trying." The voting system is like that. I don't think you can even please half the people half the time with it. But getting rid of it entirely won't work either, because we all love to hit those "1" and "5" buttons. You do realize what you just told us about yourself Marc? :) Simple psychology says you enjoy the anonymous down-votes. And what would that gain us? Beyond petty bickering and revenge voting. The trolls will just create fake accounts to vote from. I doubt it, since most of these voters are cowards anyway. When they're held liable in a way that CP knows they're just weirdo freaks they'd be less likely to. Granted, I'm sure there would be some revenge voting, but it won't be that bad (remember, some people care about what others think of them). Anybody who takes the voting on CP seriously, really needs to get some perspective. I know what you mean. It's obvious that anyone who votes me down is an idiot, and anyone who votes me up is a genius. As such, I don't have an issue with it. :) Jeremy Falcon

Oh, it's most definitely broke. It currently helps the readers, but penalizes the authors. Does CP want to encourage good articles? - then help the authors a bit here. Authors getting voted down without any feedback is a pretty pointless exercise isn't it? I've even seen one your articles prefaced with something like "Please don't vote without providing feedback." I'm sure that probably just encouraged the trolls... But it's not that hard to fix. A little tweak to the ole profiles, that's all. OT: For VS 2005 Tips and Tricks - is it possible to generate a .Net Framework 1.1 executable from VS 2005? If there's some way to do it that'd be a nice trick!

In at least one case, I gave a post a high rating because I thought that it had unjustly been given a 1. But then I had to ask myself if this was an appropriate way to use my vote. You're voting to affect the overall average rather than voting on what you think the merits of an article/post are on its own. Granted, you're trying to affect the average in such a way as to make it more reflective of what you think it merits, but there's something about that that seems unfair to me. It seems to take away something from those voting strictly on merits regardless of what the average is. The ratings on individual posts don't mean a lot to me, though I will take notice of a 2 or 1 and review my answer to someone to see if maybe I had dropped the ball (I'm speaking mainly about my posts to my articles' message boards). On the other hand, article ratings do mean a lot to me. Ideally, they are a reflection of how well my articles have been received and if I did a decent job communicating their purpose and ideas. On the whole, I have been satisfied that my article/post ratings have been fair. I have no complaints.
