I have just installed Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise (only the VC++ stuff) on a fresh Windows XP machine (Whoops, I had said 2000 - that may help). After installation I spent a great deal of time configuring the menus and toolbars just how I like them, but whenever I restart the damned dprogram everything reverts to it's factory settings! I have not yet installed any plugins as far as I am aware (none are in use either way), and I am running with Power User privalleges (not that I had any problems with it before). Please tell me there is a commonly known solution to this problem. Serious replies only please, as I am not in a good mood today. --= UPDATE =-- As an experiment I just installed Windows XP on a new partition (3x80 GB drives!), and installed VS 6 Ent again, this time with all the defaults. Same problem. None of my toolbar or menu settings are saved, but everything else is. Is this a known problem with VS 6 on Windows XP - 'cause I couldn't find anything on the MS KB. Or maybe CD1 of VS 6 has become corrupted? I'll format my latest attempt and stick Windows 2000 Pro back on and give it a shot to test that out. --= UPDATE 2 =-- Under Windows 2000 Pro it works as expected. This is getting very confusing now. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk Sonork ID: 100.9977 Dave

No, but I have all the necessary privaleges (and i've tried under the admin account with no difference). It is strange because all the other settings are being stored, just not the menu and toolbar customisations. Does anybody know what the *.pkg files in the msdev98 directory do? Maybe one of those has become corrupted. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk Sonork ID: 100.9977 Dave

So you start MSDEV make a change to a toolbar/keyboard binding and then exit and it doesn't save? Or are you doing something else like changing the toolbar layout during a debug session and then aborting? Something it wont save unless it exits properly.**

Done that too. I have tried isntalling from scratch ona a new parition (again with Windows XP) and it didn't work, I tried repairing the installation, it didn't work, I tried swearing abuse at the machine, that didn't work either. :(( I guess someone is trying to tell me to switch back to Windows 2000. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk Sonork ID: 100.9977 Dave

The last instance to exit will overwrite the settings. I have a keyboard.reg, textedit.reg and format.reg which have the following keys saved [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\DevStudio\6.0\Keyboard] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\DevStudio\6.0\Format] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\6.0\Text Editor] this way I can setup a new machine asap with all my settings (minus add-ins of course those are more annoying).**

Try this as a last resort: Boot your Win2000 machine with VC6 that has your settings the way you like them. Export the CurrentUser\Software\Microsoft\Developer, CurrentUser\Software\Microsoft\DevStudio, and LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\DevStudio from RegEdit to a set of .REG files. Copy these to your XP machine. Import them, and see if VC6 on XP uses these settings. If they do not, then there is some problem with XP.

Try using regmon to see if the registry is giving you an access denied or something like that. Crivo Automated Credit Assessment

I have consistently had a similar problem with VC++ 6.0 Prof. under NT 4.0 and 2000 Prof. I have reported the problem many times and asked advice on CodeProject and the Microsoft newsgroups, but no soap. My problem is that some, but not all, of my customizations are forgotten. My menu customizations sort of persist, but if I rename menu entries (e.g., rename the menu item for the macro JMG_Insert_CVS_Header to "Insert CVS Header") the IDE remembers the new name once, but the second time I start the IDE after renaming the menu item, it forgets the new name and reverts to the name of the macro. This behavior is 100% reproducible under several computers.
