Number 2 or even 3 is fine with me. But I might narrow the gap down to 300 posts. Anyway these last few days I have not been too well, which is why I have been slightly slow here :-) Nish I submitted a new article on Winsock, and 15 seconds later, I hit [preview the article] in step-5 of the submission wizard, only to find that it's been rated 1. The number of views said 4. Thus 3 others must have viewed it. 15 seconds! Now I am not pissed at all. But I wonder why Chris M still maintains this useless rating feature. I fully understand that, the article might not deserve a 5 or even a 4. But it surely is better than 1! Others' views are invited.

I've been trying to get one working for three months:laugh: First the Pres drops a box called a SonicWall on my desk and tells me to connect it so that he can run our third store. Mind you, I know nothing of this store - what OS, how many PCs, IP addresses - nothing. Nor have I ever seen a DSL modem, or a router. Nor is DSL offerred in our area; nobody thought to ask me. But I've got this SonicWall box he handed me, and a microwave ISP connection. The microwave service enters via coax to a PCMCIA card in the server - the SonicWall can only connect to Ethernet on the LAN and WAN side. I found a box that is supposed to take my PCMCIA card and convert it to Ethernet; it didn't. Called their tech support for help, and it turns out they're discontinuing it and the guy that designed it, the only one who knows how to make it work, doesn't work there any more. In the meantime, I'm fiddling with this SonicWall and discover that it's the wrong model - too few licenses for the number of users. Re-order and wait... In the interim, DSL is suddenly available. The telco provides the equipment and I spend weeks trying to get that to work. I tried to get tech support from the phone company, but their tech came out verified my settings, shook his head and left. More calls... two months have now transpired. I finally am allowed to talk to a network engineer at the telco. He laughs and tells me that the equipment they issued can't possibly work in this configuration, then orders the correct equipment. When it arrived I fiddled with it, he remotely played with it, for about two weeks. Then he tries a couple of tests that he normally wouldn't try. The modem is internally defective. The good news is, he's sending me a new one. The bad news, he's just been laid off and his office discontinued. I need a stiff drink and a peer group... A newbie's elementary guide to spawning salmon
Roger Wright wrote: The bad news, he's just been laid off and his office discontinued. Similar thing happened to me. (not modem related) Good news was one phone call from my area manager to a VP and we hired him. :)

Good thread, Christian. Thanks for helping to keep me sane all night... Enjoy the DSL - welcome to the world of real-time communications! It still amazes me to think that I can spend my time chatting with the high-quality gents and ladies of CP, scattered as we are around the globe, with but moments of latency. It wasn't but two or three generations ago that a single 'post' would have taken several years to reach all of us... if ever. We live in an amazing age! A newbie's elementary guide to spawning salmon
