Are those of you who are making all these VS 2005 posts just now installing VS2005? Did you guys play with the betas or RCs at all...or is this your first exposure?
And that's not all. I just discovered this cool concept called "object oriented design". I can't wait to convert my subroutines to class methods! :-D -Ravi Bhavnani on finally installing XP SP2...in December 2005

i don't have much choice... i need it in order to build VS05-compatible versions of the libraries my company sells. i'll probably stick with VC6 for the actual development of the library, though. Cleek | Image Toolkits | Thumbnail maker

I installed (and am still using) the final RC that my boss came back from the US PDC with. I use it for one project at the moment - a WTL-based PocketPC app. First impressions are mostly favourable, but I've yet to hammer it. I converted a large-ish server application (ATL/STL/Boost based) as an experiment, and had awful problems with IntelliSense working one minute, and stopping the next, which I hope has been fixed. I should get a proper release version any day now, as part of my company's December MSDN mailling. I could download it I guess, but am happy to wait (I finish for Christmas on Friday, so will probably wait until the New Year now).

You can get the Express Edition for free, just in case you hadn't heard. But you are probably looking for some of the advanced functionality...

Is there a resource that discusses what can co-exist with what? IDEs: VB6 Sp5? VS 2003, and VS 2005? AND Run Times: VB6 Runtime, .Net Framework 1.1, and .Net Framework 2.0? I have heard that .Net 1.1 and .Net 2.0 side-by-sides without issue, and I have heard there is a plugin that will allow VS 2005 to compile into .Net 1.1, are these rumors true? And the survey says: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms246609.aspx[^] do you need to investigate an online backup[^] company -- modified at 20:14 Monday 12th December, 2005

I'm using it just to try new IDE and new MSDN... ;) Well.. I starded to develop with asp .net because I found visual web developer really nice :) Pity is that C++ express edition doesn't come with MFC: this mean that I must buy visual studio standard or professional.. but just for "playing" with C# or asp .net is a nice choice... Francesco TBEditor: a pandapowered app!

I believe you can use MFC with the Express Edition if you want. MFC comes with the Windows SDK that Express points you to when you follow its links to download the SDK. I found MFC42.lib and include headers, so I think all you have to do is set your project settings manually... No auto setup, unless you can hack the XML sources... Others will have to comment more, as I have never used MFC. It sure looks possible, though. David

All .NET runtimes can co-exist with each other and with the VB6 runtime. If they couldn't, I would consider .NET to be very poorly implemented. Imagine the nightmare if it were not so, and someone installed an application based on .NET 1.1, one based on .NET 2.0, and one written in VB6. The poor user would have to choose which application he wanted to use, and would not be able to use the others. All of the release VS versions are also compatible with each other. You can do an MSBuild compile to .NET 1.1 from VS2005.
