Does anyone have any recommendations for a CHEAP but good ASP.NET hosting company with SQL DB available?
Yes, I program in VB6, but only because I use it to fill my addiction to having a dry place to sleep and food to eat! -

Yes, I program in VB6, but only because I use it to fill my addiction to having a dry place to sleep and food to eat!I personally use WebHost4Life[^]. If you like what they have to offer, please mention me as the reference. They've had very few problems and when they do have an issue, it's immediately solved with a single email or phone call to support. Cheers, Tom Archer "Use what talents you possess. I'm curious on this, I have heard you recommend them before, but rule #1 I've always been told on webhosts is stay away from people who offer "Unlimited Bandwidth" because there is truly no such thing (Bandwidth costs money and if they let everyone have as much as the want they would be out of business pretty quick) some places have metered bandwith and call it unlimited (Where you can only do a max of 12K a second so you could only ever have XX amount of bandwidth transferred per month) I'm not trying to argue about them but just get more info cause I really want to give them a try, I just don't want to be booted off the server if a website started using 10-20 or even 30 GB bandwidth a month... With your site does it get a good amount of traffic? Thanks!

Kluch wrote: rule #1 I've always been told on webhosts is stay away from people who offer "Unlimited Bandwidth" Many places that say this, usually have an exception for using too much CPU or too much bandwidth causing problems for others. Of course, in their mind unlimited may equate to 1 gig per month ;) In many cases they just cram a ton of people on one box with a 10 megabit networkd card and let it go. Of course, prices have come down on bandwidth. The place I host with (http://ServerBeach.com[^], they are now offering $139 per month for a dedicated Windows 2003 server with 2,000 gigs of bandwidth per month. They server I have with them comes with 900 gigs per month which will probably be plenty for my and the about 30 sites I host on there. A few years ago you would be lucky to get a T1 for $1,500 per month. For price and performance it can be better to get with a few other people and go in together on a dedicated server. If you had a server for $150 per month and had 30 others go in with you, it is only $7 per month and you have more bandwidth than you would probably ever use. Not only that, but you server will only have 30 sites on it instead of a shared host that have hundreds on a single server. If you are dealing iwth ASP.NET application, you will want some CPU left over ;) Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com

Unlimited Bandwidth usually equates to 'we're too lazy to figure out how to throttle your account.' If you cause problems on the network with your traffic, some kind of protective filtering is going to be used. But I have a lot of problems with signing on to a service that limits my bandwidth or total transfer volume. I refuse to do it. The vast majority of websites generate little or no traffic at all, and placing arbitrary limits on accounts sounds like no more than a way to oversubscribe the service and charge busy users for it. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I use quite a bit of bandwidth and have never experienced any problem with throttling. I think you also have to keep one thing in mind. "Unlimited bandwidth" is a marketing ploy similar to "all you can eat". Obviously, if everyone went into such a diner and ate a ton of food the restaurant would lose money. However, most people are so enthralled with the concept that they can eat all they want that they pay the extra money, eat one plate of food and go home. It's the same thing with web hosting. Most people see "unlimited bandwidth" and get stars in their eyes about all the money they're going to be making one day and think they need that plan. They then use a very tiny amount of bandwidth over the course of their service agreement. These people make up the vast majority and offset people such as you and me who use quite a bit of bandwidth. I use them also. I've been very happy with them. I don't use much bandwidth (because no one goes to my site :-D ), but I've used them for several clients, one of which used quite a bit of bandwidth because of high traffic and MP3s on his site. Never had any problems with downtime. Their basic package is $3.95/month and you have to add $10/month for SQL Server. Jeff Martin Triple20 Software

We were using their advance plan ($9.95/mo, SQL 2000 inclusive) for about a year and didn't have any problems, support was also very good. I have been warned about the "unlimited bandwidth" thing too, but we had anything from 5GB to 40GB per month and everything was working fine. I think that they would probably suggest moving to a dedicated server if you would be getting too much traffic. Anyway, I can only recommend their service. Rado
