Code Project Sister Site
-
Hi, i was wondering what people think about having a Code Project sister site targeting non-MS technologies (ie. PHP). I've asked Chris that question before and he said that it would be great but he doesn't have that much time. I just want to see the votes. If there is a huge demand, than Chris might consider that. Will you Chris ?
Let me start off by saying *I have nothing against other technologies*!!! I do think, though, that making the scope of this site too broad will severely harm the depth of the current focus. Creating a site much like Code Project for non-MS technologies (and, dare I say it, maybe even VB) is merely a matter of utilizing the tools at hand. The forums are being developed in PHP and Perl, and the right person could surely reverse engineer the functionality of this whole site. It's all a matter of good old-fashioned "want-to." You and Roger seem to be the big non-MS proponents as of late - why not team up and come up with your own version? Getting content wouldn't be difficult because there are many, many, many sites filled how-to's, etc... Just contact the authors and ask them to post at your site. Personally, I use other sites to learn about PHP, MySQL, Perl, Linux, blah, blah, blah... But if someone were to come up with a site showcasing those technologies like Code Project does for C++, MFC, C# and .NET, I would surely sign up in an instant. Given that Chris is swamped with his current tasks, we shouldn't burden him with "porting" the site to other technologies. That is left to one or more motivated individuals. My $0.02. Building another site to match CodeProject in the Linux (or non-MS world) is something that makes me want to have a couple of aspirins and a quick lie down. CodeProject has barely touched it's potential and to divert energy to something else would mean that CodeProject would suffer. I would love to, but at the moment it's simply impossible. cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

Personally, I'd be more interested in seeing if someone could put together something like MSDN for the Linux and Friends technologies. A reference site dedicated to describing the Linux API functions would be very useful. While working on a Linux threading class implementation for my game engine, I spent the better part of an hour today looking online for the prototype of their thread entrypoint function. I eventually just booted up my Slackware installation and dug it out of pthread.h. Kinda kills your productivity when you need to load up the kernel source, or reboot your machine under a new OS, just to find some basic information. If there's already a site like that out there, please, let me know now before I get to writing the Linux networking code... :-D

What i meant by a sister site was that the other site is going to be completely independent just like this one. What i mean by this is that the other site would be hosted on a different server and it would have different forums, etc. which means that the forums WON'T be filled with flame wars since there will be 2 different site for 2 different technologies. Only the owner would be the same (Chris). and maybe the design too if that is what Chris wants.

Hey Chris, I think you have done a great job with this site. Personally I think it's a "waste of valuable time" if you also should mantain/develop a site for/on linux. - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

Maybe you find somewhere on this earth a clone of you with the same enthusiasm, knowledge and will. This guy(s) could run the site, not you. -- See me: www.magerquark.de Want a job? www.zeta-software.de/jobs

I would like to see a site like sourceforge devoted to MFC, ATL... etc programming where people can start some small projects and LEARN from working on the projects. I have a name for it, too - codersproject.com :)

If you go to The Linux Documentation Project, you may find some of what you want. The general *nix mentality is that everything should be in the man pages. For the most part, this is true. You can look through section 3 of the manual pages (usually subdivided -- 3C is the C-library, 3X is XWindow, etc.) for information about almost any function. Unfortunately, examples and sample code are usually missing from the pages. So, I would second your motion: If anyone knows of an MSDN-like project for *nix, I would be most interested. If someone wanted to make one from scratch, using the nroff/groff source for the man pages would be a good starting point. You could have different sections in the tree for C-library, XWindow Library, C++/STL-Library, etc. -- Paul "I drank... WHAT?"

Egads! A clone of Chris Maunder. Now that's a scary thought  (Uncloned) Chris.

Linux is not that bad. It is not developed for the average user. It is highly developed for server end stuff and SQL. Visit Ltpb.8m.com Surf the web faster than ever: http://www.404Browser.com
