Good Bye IE, Hello Fire Fox...

$99 to update a FREE BROWSER... unless you have XP. Well at our offices, Fire Fox will soon be our choice on older machines... Furthermore, all future updates for IE will be available for only Windows XP… I am sorry wasn’t support for Windows 2000 extended??? http://news.com.com/Microsoft+to+secure+IE+for+XP+only/2100-1032_3-5378366.html[^] ------ I am the sole owner of all comments/statements made by myself, and they do not represent those of my company in any way. Furthermore, it’s a shame it has come to the point where we have to make statements like this. Cheers! ====================== Matthew R. Miller www.computersmarts.net[^]

This sort of FUD really pisses me off. From the article, "We do not have plans to deliver Windows XP SP2 enhancements for Windows 2000 or other older versions of Windows" So no enhancements to old Windows versions; No-Execute won't be present, no popup blocker maybe, no new security center for Windows 98...did we really expect them to be actively developing 'enhancements' to old OSes? And what the hell is this about security?? MS mentions not a damned thing about stopping security updates for IE. On the contrary, and contrary to the sensationalist headlines of the FUD article, tucked away in a small corner near the end of the article, this little gem is found: "Microsoft promised "ongoing security updates" for all supported versions of Windows and IE." Ah, the truth is revealed. Woops, didn't read that on Slashdot. Slashdot et al are trying to make a big thing out of this, trying to make Microsoft look bad and encourage migration to a browser other than IE. Come to think of it, that's why I hate Linux zealots, examples just like these where they twist and turn anything Microsoft says. Damned if you do damned if you don't if you're MS. That said, Firefox is undoubtedly a better browser than IE at this time, I'm even writing this post in Firefox. I just hate sensationalist, FUD spreading media headlines, and people who take the bait so easily. Blah. X| Judah Himango

Well, i hate to say it, but the writing's been on the wall for quite some time. When was it, when MS first said that IE was an inseperable part of the OS? Five years ago? Six? While use of such tactics might have been debatable then, the stagnation in development we've seen since has made them painfully obvious. I've had Mozilla installed on all my machines ever since...
You**'re one microscopic cog** in his catastrophic plan... -

Come to think of it, that's why I hate Linux zealots, examples just like these where they twist and turn anything Microsoft says. Damned if you do damned if you don't if you're MS. "SlashDot" accepts news bits from it's users, and allows them to exercise a huge amount of editorial freedom in HOW they present the news as well as how much to present and in which context. Also, let's not forgwet that Microsoft zealots are equally as bad about this as their Linux counterparts. The news you read truly is what you make of it. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. If you're not here to race, go the hell home - don't come here and grumble about going too fast. Why don't you tie a kerosene rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

Yes, and they present the news as facts, just like today's headline "Microsoft To Provide IE Patches for Windows XP Only" which is an untrue, misleading headline with the intent of inflaming anger against Microsoft. Judah Himango

I guess it's easy to lull the weak-minded into following along. I read it for the bits of news that pops up now and then. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'.
