Your thoughts on Noam Chomsky
-
I've never given him/her a second thought. :) Who might this person be and why could his/her opinions be of any importance to my life? Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] Gently arching his fishing rod back he moves the tip forward in a gentle arch releasing the line.... kersplunk [Doug Goulden] Nice sig! [Tim Deveaux on Matt Newman's sig with a quote from me]
besides beeing one of the greatest computer science mind in language theory, syntax theory and linguistic theory, he's a leftist "free mind" ( esprit libre ). I find some of his writting very interresting while some others a bit too much "leftist"

What do you think about Noam Chomsky and his opinions? Regards, Björn Morén Stockholm, Sweden
Sometimes Noam forgets humanities nature-of-the-beast when building his observations and arguments. He sometimes roots his arguments in utopic templates that make for seductive reasoning but ultimately reach unrealistic conclusions. Give me a Churchill-esque observer and commentor anytime. Too bad I haven't found a modern day equavilant. I enjoy the humor of Ann Coulter http://www.anncoulter.org/[^], as a close second to Churchill's scorching humor [^]. Jerry He said this was like painstakingly assembling the first layer of a house of cards, then boasting that the next 15,000 layers were a mere formality.--The Code Book, pp. 331 Toasty0.com DotNetGroup.org

don't know anything about his political writing, though i'm told he represents me and that i'm responsible for every thing he says. from what i've read, his reputation as a linguist is a pretty strong one, though his theories are falling out of favor these days. Do you refer to his comments about current world events, or his ideas of a future better world? Perhaps both? I find him to have a sharp intellect, a lot of knowledge about historic and contemporary events, and he often surprise me with interesting conclusions that are hard to contradict. Exactly. It isn't that his logic is flawed per se, but to accept his conclusion(s) one must first accept his logical foundations. It is those foundations that I believe are sometimes rooted in a premise that are, to my mind, failures to accept humanities base desires and motivations. Toasty0 wrote: You're one helluva a class act, dude. yeah, that means a lot coming from someone who thinks Ann "blow up the NYT" Coulter is funny. maybe if i'd said "the only way to talk to libruls is with a baseball bat" or "we need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors," you'd have a better opinion of me. Image Toolkits | Image Processing | Cleek

He's a good read. If they put his essays on the Opinion page of the local paper, i'd probably read it more often. I wouldn't care to make any general statements of agreement/disagreement though. Let's just leave it as "more entertaining than 'Friends', on par with 'Seinfeld'"... ;)

JoeSox wrote: If they have fallen out of favor than whose are in favor these days? really can't say. i'm not into the kind of hard core linguistics where he did his work, but on almost all discussions i've read on him, it always comes up that "...his theory on XYZ doesn't make sense in light of ____" or "his theories on PDQ were interesting at the time, but now linguists think more along the lines of ____". and that's the extent of my knowledge on Chomsky :) mostly i know that, as someone who votes to the left of John McCain, everything Chomksy has ever said on any political matter is my burden to bear - his ideas are my ideas, his opinions mine, his statements mine. in that sense, he's like Michael Moore or that professor from that college i'd never heard of who said something dumb three years ago and now represents the pure crystallized essence of what it means to be a Democrat. or something. fuckin hate politics today. Are you saying that Chomsky is a person claiming to be unusually enlightened with regard to a subject? It doesn't matter if he is or not, imo. His opinions are interesting to listen too and he does have some books out and teaches at a University. He can't be worse than Moore. Moore just makes movies.
