Hi guys, As you can guess from the title, my good lady wife and I are expecting our first child (in June). We've been trying to find that special name without success. We don't know if it's a boy or girl. That'll be a nice surprise on the day. Any suggestions would be great. We're looking for something not too strange, but not so common that everyone in his/her class has the same name. Thanks in advance Andy

I'm about to adopt my step son Connor, and we're changing his middle name to "Clay". We were gonna let him choose his own middle name, but his ideas for names, Pixo or Springo, he'd probably regret later in life. :) So now he's Connor Clay. "Clay" is definitely more common than strange. Oh well, it makes up for my never-heard-before name. :-)

I have always favored Gaelic names for girls, and two of favorites for my daughter were "Roisin" (Row-Sheen) and "Seosaimhthin" (SHOH-si-veen, like "Josephine").    However, one must consider the fact that she would be forever telling people how to pronounce and spell her name...! So in the end, we decided on "Madeleine".  But people even get that wrong and pronounce it as "Mad-el-LINE" instead of "Mad-el-LYNN", because they do not see it is the French spelling of the name (three "e"s).    Good luck!    Peace! -=- James

we just found out my wife is pregnent with our first child this past Friday. We are in the process of deciding names as well. It's a lot tougher than I thought it would be because were trying to get a name that won't cause the child grief on the playground or later in life, but won't be so common that they don't like it at all. (btw, congrats on your first child also!)

No specific suggestion, but some rough guidelines: :bob: Do pick a name that is not too difficult to spell or pronounce. I feel bad for people whos names are always mangled or misspelled. :bob: Do not take a common name, and change the spelling. :bob: You might consider picking a relatively common first name, but make the middle name something real special and unique. My middle initial is T, even though it is a lie, I always tell people it stands for Tiberius. :-D :bob: I tend to prefer names that have been used commonly for many different generations. A lot of names tend to be specific for a particular generation, and you can tell the rough age of a person just by their name sometimes. Not sure if I explained that correctly. The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance.

Here on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver island many of my friends parents were old time hippies and so the kids ended up with very typical names like "sky" or "raven" but one of my friends parents did have a good idea, when their son was born they couldn't decide on a name so they decided to let him choose as a "rite of passage" when he turned 12. They called him "Noah" up until he got to choose. He chose "Faro" and would never explain why, but it seems as good as anything else. Although maybe in this day and age you can't get away with that kind of thing. There is actually a *lot* of research out there on names and how people are perceived when all you know is their name but haven't met them yet. You should look into that failing anything else because there are clear trends involved there and no sense in saddling your kid with a potentially bad name. (it wasn't based on particular names, but based on vowels and consonants etc)

For a girl I like Lily, Angela, Kerry, Allison (yes "Allison", not "Alyson", there can be only one Alyson ;)) --Mike-- LINKS~! Ericahist | 1ClickPicGrabber | CP SearchBar v2.0.2 | C++ Forum FAQ Strange things are afoot at the U+004B U+20DD

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I think names should be choosen in honour of people near and dear to you. Boys should be named after their grand fathers and uncles, and girls after their grand mothers and aunts. It is a very good way to cement the bond between them. I was named after my maternal grandfather and we were always close. I know my name has special meaning in the family, and is not just something my parents came up with on a whim.
