Hi guys, As you can guess from the title, my good lady wife and I are expecting our first child (in June). We've been trying to find that special name without success. We don't know if it's a boy or girl. That'll be a nice surprise on the day. Any suggestions would be great. We're looking for something not too strange, but not so common that everyone in his/her class has the same name. Thanks in advance Andy
Are you sure this is a good idea? Some friends were mine were asked the same thing by a nice Danish couple they met on a holiday. My friends claim they were not told what the names were for, so they imagined something like a mild curiosity attack or a research for a travel book. Now they refuse to admit any responsibility, but they sent a mixed list with both boy's and girl's names, no other explanation attached. Needless to say, the poor baby girl ended up being called Vasile, which might sound great when pronounced with a Danish accent but it's as much boy's name as you can get in our country. Plus she'll have to spend a lot more time than most 'average' girls spelling her name to people. But that's not so bad for a girl, being the 'fair sex' they seem to be able to get away unharmed with a lot more things than us, rough, tough guys :-) OGR

delete this;I agree. It is an excellent name. In fact, when Canada polled its citizens to find out what they wanted the Northwest Province to be called, Bob was the leading candidate. Bob. Not Robert, not Robbie. Bob has the additional advantage of being a palindrome. :-D

If it's a girl, I'd like to recommend Shalimar. Shalimar was an extraordinarily beautiful spirit, a student at my karate school who was a delight to see, to talk with, to spar with; intelligent, sweet, a quick and agile learner, and beautiful to boot. About a week before I finally worked up the courage to ask her out, she was killed in a single-vehicle rollover accident - a fluke, as no drugs or alcohol were involved. Something just went wrong, and she was called home early. That lovely name deserves to be preserved, preferably in the same spirit that she wore it. If it's a boy, nothing short of Bob will do. Congratulations! Got a boy and a girl myself last year in June, and we faced the same challenge. The boy is named 'Kåre', pronounced 'core', and it is fairly special but not uncommon in Denmark. I guess it would be too special in your part of the world :-D Our daughter is named 'Freja', which is so common, that I have to whistle instead of calling her name when she starts in kindergarten :-). My girlfriend is still a bit irritated, because she wanted her to be named 'Iben', would sound a bit like 'Eeben', but I just found 'Freja' too cute. How about Mathilda?, for a girl of course :-D, and Alexander for a boy? Wait until the baby is born. I found that I was inspired after seeing my son. The name just popped into my head (almost like he told me his name, for you new-agers out there). When I said his name, my wife thought it was perfect (phew!) His name is "Ian". Marc MyXaml Advanced Unit Testing YAPO

Congratulations!!! I'd like to recommend a few names :) How about Mikka for a girl? It's pronounced "Me' - kah. I've heard that in Japan it's a common girls' name, but here in the US when it came to me, I had thought I was being original! I also like "Karma" for a girl. For a boy's name, sorry I can't think of anything unusual, without the name being tortuous for any potential owner. I like names that are spelled similarly to how they sound, so the poor tyke doesn't need to spell and re-spell it for everyone (as other people have mentioned here). Also like names on the shorter side. My sis-in-law Stephanie often complained to me how during school tests (computer-read type) she'd have to fill in each circle for each letter of her name- she took longer than most kids around her because of the length of her entire name.
