How about not defaulting all your documents etc. to your profile, typically stored on the most volatile disc on your system and all copied to the network everytime your start up and shut down? I never understood that....

Seriously? How many people 'work' at more than one PC? I've never known it - that's what networks are for, so you don't have to copy files from one machine to another all the time...

At least with Microsoft's solution you can still work. Yeah, but if your up to date profile is on the network, you're in the same position. And uncontrolled, 'My Documents' could easily get into the 100s of MBs (especially if you have music in there), waiting for this to download/upload all the time is not my cup of tea. If I want to transfer that much data, I'd use a DVD or memory stick if the network was down. Maybe it's just me - I never liked Microsoft's assumption that I'd want to put all my stuff where they say. And like I said, your system disc is the most volatile and the place you are most likely to lose improtant stuff. I don't keep anything on my C: drive that I care about. I know you can move your 'My Documents' folder, but if you are going to do that, you might as well just organise your stuff your own way anyway, which is what I do. I honestly didn't think any computer professionals used 'My Documents', but I'm prepared to admit to being wrong.:^) (even if you all know it's a bad idea really ;) )

FWIW, at my work the IT people have things set up so that everyone's MyDocuments folder is mapped to a virtual drive on a network server. They then have things set up on their end so that a periodic snapshot is made of the user directories, which is then saved elsewhere for archiving, and eventually to tape for offsite storage (for disaster recovery). 'til next we type... HAVE FUN!! -- Jesse
