Instant Messanging Annoyance & Time

the original Post Hijacker message (tm) My original message got sucked into Nish's joke so I am reposting, very odd IMs have really blossomed in the last year or two what with ICQ, Yahoo, AIM, MSN Messenger, Odio and now Sonork all jumping on the bandwagon. I am curious to know if anyone actually uses IM for serious purposes? e.g. business use, project communication, client communication etc. Also what really bugs you about IM and what is it that you wish IM could or would do? For instance MSN Messenger is fine but for business use it is useless as it has no message history. ICQ is better at that but it is a bit spam ridden and has a big memory footprint. Sonork has been a pleasant surprise in the last few days. In fact if more people started using it (including my clients and partners) then I would use it permanently and dump ICQ and MSN. One of the better features is that you can setup your own private IM network on your intranet (or between intranets). It would be nice of MSN messenger to have an option to start up in appear off-line mode or busy mode. The number of times I've left my computer to boot whilst going for a coffee and then coming back to find several people wanting to talk. MSN would also be better if recorded conversation historys. MSN is far superior to ICQ though, at least I haven't had any spam messages from MSN. Michael :-)

Check Thomas's reply to my post, there he points out an app that plugs into MSN and enables logging :-D MSN is far superior to ICQ though, at least I haven't had any spam messages from MSN. I would have to disagree. ICQ is a better app and service in almost every respect. Yes you get spam but you can ignore, ban and also not publish your details publicly which helps a lot (I get maybe one ICQ spam a week now, not bad). MSN has no history function (withouth a 3rd party app) while ICQ has this built in. Also if an MSN user is offline you can only email them! What a farce! ICQ you can just leave an instant messange which they get as soon as they login. Just those two gripes keep me from switching all together to MSN. However MSN does have a better interface and is simpler to use. It is also smaller which is a bonus. Also with ICQ you can set it up to not connect on boot, or go into automatic Busy mode straight away. Also ICQ has only ever crashed once on my machine, MSN crashes quite regularly. ICQ is also a lot more configurable and, for the fun concious, skinnable :) However Sonork is FAST becoming my preferred IM. Timex Corporation has always been a "new technology" beta site for Microsoft. We had done some joint developments with them in the past (Data Link watches), so we were kind of "lucky" to be given this "honor." We rolled out Windows 2000 8 months before it went public, and we are now rolling out Windows XP (albeit a little late :)). We are using Passport accounts with our timex.com mail addresses for in-house use. I frequently have IM discussions with our graphics design department when I do Shockwave development. The company believes that everyone should have the ability to communicate with everyone anywhere/anytime. In fact, IM use is encouraged because it doesn't clutter up the mail server with useless diatribes. I think that IM'ing is a great idea, and I think more companies should take advantage of it. I use MSN Messenger to answer quick questions from the freelancers that I manage. It's easier than getting stuck in long phone calls. But most of the time, I chat to my mates. :) Cheers, Paul

I tried Trillian for a while. At first it seems really nice. It has a support for skins, ...etc. But it is not as fast as Sonork. Also it is not stable at all. Moreover, its functionality is limited. I've noticed people putting Sonork in their sigs, but didn't know what it was. I'm working on a project with people in two other countries at the moment and we are using MSN Messenger ( when the network is up ) to keep abreast of what we are all doing. I just save the discussion as a txt file if I was told anything I want to refer back to. I finally evicted ICQ recently, we only had that up because sometimes the boss gets some really dumb people in ( like people who come and tell him about their projects in 3D that after three years are almost as good as the maze screen saver ), and we amuse ourselves by commenting in ICQ to each other. No more, I was sick of the daily roll of pr0n spam. I must check out this Sonork thing of which you speak....
