I feel that an alternative to meaningless drivvel is important and should be presented so that there are alternatives to what some people think is appropriate for a particular forum or timeslot; provided it is presented in a way that is not offensive to the usual participants, i.e., (in this case) "kid sister". To say that only mindless matter should be discussed on the lounge is offensive to me and violates the basic tennet of the lounge as being a place to "discuss things that don't quite fit elsewhere". If I want a discussion I will go to the lounge and if to rant I will go to the soapbox. When the "thought police" are allowed to dictate what is objectionable or proper for discussion on the lounge we all are deprived of an opportunity to learn from the diverse group of people, with varying opinions I might add, who, for the most part, post reasoned arguments. Well, I can't say that I disagree with you. In fact, I don't mind having a few political discussions (and other mature-themed discussions), but a few weeks ago (even until now) there had been several discussions in the Lounge that heated up into rants (at least IMO). Therefore I'd rather have a potentially escalating exploding discussion (i.e. politics, religion) in the Soapbox, not to mention that there is the benefit that you can express your opinions more freely in that area (no kid-sister rule). There are no "thought police" in CP, but if all I see in the Lounge is politics then I'd much rather go to the ASP/SQL/C# forums :). I expect the Lounge to be a place for me to laze about and perhaps check some interesting POTD, JOTD, FOTD links. Signature The only valid use of the BLINK tag:

Therefore I'd rather have a potentially escalating exploding discussion (i.e. politics, religion) in the Soapbox, not to mention that there is the benefit that you can express your opinions more freely in that area (no kid-sister rule). There are no "thought police" in CP, but if all I see in the Lounge is politics then I'd much rather go to the ASP/SQL/C# forums :). However I can't understand why somone else who does not agree with my views then needs to take the arguement to a pesonal level. - If on the other hand I use hate speech (or writing), I really am setting myself up by inciting those who have various sensitivities. - What is worrying is that so many CPians and others in the broader community can not differentiate from the two. - Anyhow say what you like in the lounge without fear of offending me. As you pointed out it is not even a rule of the Lounge. It is just something that over the years we have come to a mutual agreement on. People come to the Lounge to mainly relax. Having that spoiled by heated and far-ranging political or religious topics is not relaxing. So as a courtesy we discuss difficult topics in the Soapbox. In my opinion it is they lack the imagination to discuss controversial topics on their merits and need to "retaliate" with a personal attack when they disagree with your opinion. Too many people will read something and not take the time to consider what the other person is trying to say. What really gets to me is when someone will mock people for their grammar when they are trying to converse in a language other than their native tongue. I would like to challenge those people to converse in the other person’s native language but then I would be getting into a discussion with someone of limited imagination and verifiably low communication skills.
