Morning. Has anyone had any experience of either Borland StarTeam or Serena Version Manager? We're looking at using something other than VSS and I'd not come across these 2 before. Any others that you've used and can recommend? (Other than Subversion or SourceGear which we are also looking at anyway). We're particularly keen on tight integration with Visual Studio 2003. (Where Subversion appears to fall down). Thanks.

Thanks you: should have said we are working primarily with web projects.

We've used StarTeam before. Although the comapny didn't like it much I personally found it powerful enough and very useful when using the SDK. We switched to the lowest version of Rational ClearCase since a client was using it and it is too expensive to buy. We are using Merant PVCS Version Manager 7.5, since bought by Serena. The integration with VS 6.0 was pretty good. I've seen a few flakey things from time to time, but I don't have much to compare it to. I never had any problems with my C++ projects, though I know some of the VB guys had some hiccups early on. I'd contribute it more to learning though than fundemental flaws. I know our web dev department is using it for their .NET projects, though I have not heard any comments good or bad, and don't deal with them often either. The biggest gripe I've had with 7.5 is the speed, but 8.0 has moved to SQL Server which supposedly has fixed this. I'm actually waiting to get a trial version of 8.0 in so I can do some testing. I'd say it's worth checking out. [edit] Changing project structure or moving projects can be a hassle sometimes, but it's not a common function, so I piss and moan and get over it quickly enough [/edit] BW

we are using StarTeam at work I like it (but I have only experience with SourceSafe except it). The good point of StarTeam is that we are using it also for tracking the ChangeRequests/Bugs. BTW, I heard a lot of good reviews of Perforce (http://www.perforce.com[^]) if you have specific questions, you can send me a mail.

I highly reccomend Perforce. The VS intergration is very good and there is an intergrated task/issue mangement of sorts. Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. Why are you dressed like that? - Jack Burton
