IS LAUREN A BIGOT?
-
I've got news for you ... I am deeply religious in the context that I firmly believe in God ... but in no way did I find Lauren's posting and/or remarks nearly as offensive as your spouting off and use of profane verbiage in the lounge, which, by-the-way, is supposed to be Kid sister safe. Go wash your mouth out, and if you have something worthwhile to say, then say it. All she did was post a link to a story; nothing more. :|

Congratulations on making yourself look like an idiot in front of thousands of people.   I expect Lauren is laughing her pants off ().

Sadly I must agree that these are just her opinions. If you have issue with them there's no need to start name-calling here. Let her know privately. If you do believe in God then you will remember the most important commandment of "love your neighbor". Though she might not agree or believe all the more reason to pray for her if you think that will help. I believe in God but I also live by the addage "all things in moderation" and it seems like for some reason today we can't do anything in moderation:sigh: Even political/religious conversations get into shouting matches between the two extremes while the rest of us who apparently just don't care enough get stuck in the middle:sigh: X| ------------------------------------- Do not do what has already been done.
I don't agree that it's just her opinion. Name-calling is not an opinion. It's bigotry. And calling someone a bigot is not name calling. It's factual.

You're saying that calling someone a name is not name calling? Interesting...

posting anti-religous crap is bigotry in action
since i hang out in the lounge for light relief, to get away from the stresses of the day, and to chat with the few people here i have started to get to know i tend to ignore the "heavy" threads. as a result i don't have any direct dealings with Lauren, but she does seem capable of holding a reasoned opinion and partaking in an intelligent debate. i am not sure how often that happens, but i have seen it happen. in contrast your post lowers you in my eyes, thus raising the relative level of Lauren, and everyone else in the lounge i pay attention to. it just goes to show, the world can be a strange and mysterious place. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

The fact that you think less of me means that I'm doing the correct thing. As far as lauren being able to hold a reasoned opinion just means you haven't paid attention or you're biased. When the defects in her reasonings and opionions are pointed-out she goes on the offensive and makes personal adhominem attacks.

Tactless, asocial, and opinionated seem to be personality traits common to a certain subset of geekdom. But, as I recall, lauren stated criticism of an institution, not a group of individuals, and I don't think that qualifies as bigotry. However, even if lauren happens to be a bigot, it seems like the best antidote is free discussion, interaction, and education. So, with that in mind, I think lauren's in the right place. (Although maybe the soapbox would be better :)) --Vincent "Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way." - Swami Vivekananda
She did more than criticize an institution, she smeared everyone who believes in god when she made her post. Not only in the title of her post ("god goes to the dogs") but also in the article linked to. It was an obvious smear, attack and slime on religious people.

Oh for craps sake grow up. My God, what a little whiner. If your faith in God is so tenous that a post entitled "god goes to the dogs" get's your panties in a twist, it's time to seriously pull yourself together. I beleive in God. I'm Roman Catholic. While I thought the article in question was a bit silly, that's as far as it went. You're simply trolling, and doing a damn good job of it, given all the responses it's generated. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! or was the title a pun on the very old agnostic dyslexic joke? you'd have to ask her. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. (Japanese Proverb)

I am a Christian, a very devout one. As far as I can see, telling Lauren she's not allowed to have an opinion that is different to mine would make me a bigot. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

Is idiot a name? Not that I am, but would I be name calling if I were to call you that? Or would it be considered "factual"? ;P
That would depend on whether or not I really am an idiot. If I'm not an idiot, than it would be name calling. If I am an idiot, that would be factual. Lauren says and does things that are normally attributed to someone who is a bigot. Therefore that makes her a bigot. If she doesn't like the truth, then she has power to change the truth. She can stop being a bigot. It's her choice.

Again, I disagree. You seem to take criticism of your religion very personally. This is understandable, of course -- one's religious beliefs are a deeply personal thing -- but you'll go through life an angry, defensive person if you view every disagreement as an attack. If you can distance yourself from it just a bit -- from the discussion, not from your faith, of course -- and perhaps think of it as concerning belief systems rather than people, you might not be as tempted to lash out, and might be able to either go with it or just let it go. I am not religious, but subscribe to Taoist philosophy, and have had some wonderful discussions with people of all faiths and philosophies. The debates are sometimes heated, mostly reasoned, and usually benefit from having either sake or good Belgian ale involved in the process. Ad hominem attacks merely decrease the value of one's other contributions to the discussion and usually subject the attacker to hoots of derision and buying the next round. I don't think anybody's fundamental belief system has ever been restructured, but everyone seems to come away a little bit enlightened -- philosophically, spiritually, intellectually, or inebriatedly.
