How is this thing really like? If I buy a copy of the Visual Studio Team Edition, can I install it on up to 10 computers in a small company or each developer in the company will need a separate license? What is the common or recommended practice? What happens in your company? Best regards, Paul. Jesus Christ is LOVE! Please tell somebody.

From my understanding, unless you have one of the bulk licences, then the licence is for a single developer. They allow you to install the operating systems on upto ten machines for testing purposes, but you should only have Visual Studio installed on one machine. (This assumes you have one MSDN licence.) If you already have an MSDN licence then speak to the online concierge, they should be able to clear things up for you.

The answer is: it depends upon the part of the MSDN you're talking about. The MSDN Library can be freely installed by anyone within your organization. You may not copy the media, but you can make it freely available. The operating systems (XP, Server 2003) may be installed on up to 10 machines for use by a single developer. The intent is that you're able to set up a small network for testing purposes. The applications (Visual Studio, SourceSafe, Office) may be installed in a single location. Depending upon how you read the EULA, you may not even be able to do the usual "desktop-and-laptop" install that a lot of companies allow for a single copy of an application. The copy of Team Edition is almost certainly only intended for a single developer, and is therefore next to useless except for evaluation and use as a single 'seat'. You'll have to buy separate copies for other developers.

If I recall correctly, the MSDN Office license does allow installation on both a desktop and a laptop. It is also the only application that is allowed to be used for general business. The others are for development, test, and demonstration only.

You're probably right. The last time I even skimmed the EULA was quite a while ago.

I have a Universal license (just transitioned it to the VS for App Architects). And have worked with clients that are MS Partners. I believe Partnership would be the way for you to go. It costs about the same as what used to be MSDN Universal. You get volume licensing and marketing help. If you want to pursue a particular niche in the software development market, MS can provide training (for a fee, of course) and put you on their roster of Preferred Partners and steer prospects your way.
