Cats every time. Dogs are too excitable and jump up and slobber and bark and crap on the pavement. Remember: a dog is not just for Christmas Day. If you're careful, there'll be enough left over for Boxing Day too...
On the other hand, along these lines, one of my friends told me that 'at least the dog does not bury his poo'. He very much disliked stepping into the 'stealth' turds buried in the yard by the cats.
