Cellphones and radios should download time automatically

Well, ignoring the non-bogus reasons (my phone is CDMA, so it won't work with GSM companies), it comes down to this: they sell you a phone that's locked into a specific provider, so the exact same phones can be sold by multiple companies, but i have to jump through all sorts of hoops to get the phone i bought through Co.A to work on Co.B's network. The stated reason for this is that, since they sell the phones at a discount, it allows them to recoup their investment... the truth is, they only give you a discount if you sign up for a contract, and breaking out of the contract costs at least as much as whatever the discount gave you. So in the end, it's a dirty way of locking you in (and also gives cell providers the leverage to discourage manufacturers from building in features they don't want you to have - namely, anything that could be used without giving the Co. extra money each time you use it).

Ah yes. This is a global tactic, happens here in Ireland and South Africa (and frankly the world is America, Ireland and South Africa. The rest use string and two cans.) You really need to make friends with a dodgy fella. They usually can either unblock your phone for you or know someone who can. Back home you could go down to the street-seller by the traffic lights and he would do it for you for 5 bob. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!
eh, stop bugging me about it, give it a couple of days, see what happens.

doCellular services in the US typically bite. Coverage can be inconsistent outside major cities and plans can be full of little "gotchas" that add to your bill. "If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done." - Peter Ustinov

Indeed and while Europe and South Africa are pretty decent for cellular service I am still waiting with baited breath for the day of IP convergence. It is going to rock. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!

Why can't someone come up with a cellphone or car radio that updates it's clock automatically? It would be a trivial matter to send a time signal over side channels.
If you're using a CDMA service it does. Your phone gets it's time from the tower, which in turn gets it's time from GPS satellites (got to be exact about the billing). My phone changes time automatically when I cross time zones and twice a year when the time changes. CDMA[^] -Sean ---- Shag a Lizard -- modified at 14:42 Monday 3rd April, 2006

Strangely the auto-update Time & Date feature on my phone started working when I entered the States. It had never worked in South Africa or Europe (well, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Greece where I have been) but worked in Vegas. When I came back to Ireland, it stopped updating. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

Are you kidding? An open system, where multiple hardware and software companies can compete on a level playing field, to the ultimate benefit of you and i? "Rock" doesn't even begin to describe it! Of course, it won't happen. The providers will find some way of either blocking service that isn't paid for at both ends, or, failing that, get laws passed to make it illegal (supposedly for the protection of small, local companies - the ones that were deemed unprofitable to begin with and had to be established via either local cooperatives or direct Gov't involvement). Mark my words: by 2015, we'll be paying less for phone service than ever before... and more than making up the difference by having to pay for sending emails.
