Why can't someone come up with a cellphone or car radio that updates it's clock automatically? It would be a trivial matter to send a time signal over side channels.

My cellphone does. The flip side is, it's really annoying when I'm not in a digital area because the stupid thing doesn't show the time! So my complaint is, why can't the cellphone have a clock chip in it? My cell phone updates automatically. As did the one I had before this one and the one before that (going back at least 6 years or so).

I had to shut my phone off to get it to update. It would nice if I didn't even have to do that. BW

My cell does... My VCR used to, but whatever signal it used doesn't seem to exist around here.

Mine keeps the time in analog areas if it was turned on in an area with digital, but won't remember it if it's restarted in an area with analog only. Would be nice.

Strangely the auto-update Time & Date feature on my phone started working when I entered the States. It had never worked in South Africa or Europe (well, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Greece where I have been) but worked in Vegas. When I came back to Ireland, it stopped updating. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

I think it depends on your provider. In the US, the roaming provider may have supported it.

Yup. But none of the providers here support it. Which is odd. It seems a simple enough service. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

As I recall, my cell phone does keep the time when in an analog area even if turned off/on, but, yesterday my wife was having a problem getting it to dial until she turned it off/on. That may have been caused by the DST change...

My phone automatically updated when we went started this years BST perfectly, it even told me had done it so I could check it. Also even when my phone is off it remembers the time, and turns it self on if you have an alarm set. Which can be a tad annoying.

My phone does auto-update .. at least that's what I thought! I had an extra hour of snooze yesterday before realizing that my cell phone time and the time of the wall clock were the same. I had to "shutdown" and "restart" the phone for the auto-update to kick-in! - Malhar

Well, ignoring the non-bogus reasons (my phone is CDMA, so it won't work with GSM companies), it comes down to this: they sell you a phone that's locked into a specific provider, so the exact same phones can be sold by multiple companies, but i have to jump through all sorts of hoops to get the phone i bought through Co.A to work on Co.B's network. The stated reason for this is that, since they sell the phones at a discount, it allows them to recoup their investment... the truth is, they only give you a discount if you sign up for a contract, and breaking out of the contract costs at least as much as whatever the discount gave you. So in the end, it's a dirty way of locking you in (and also gives cell providers the leverage to discourage manufacturers from building in features they don't want you to have - namely, anything that could be used without giving the Co. extra money each time you use it).
