Crapware

There's an InfoWorld article cited in TCP Insider for 4/18/2006: Microsoft patch causes HP crashes[^]. What a joke! More like HP crapware crashes Windows. I test my apps against Microsoft's security patches, and I have never had a problem. I doubt that anyone else who has followed the rules has had a problem either. If HP, Dell, and Toshiba didn't put 20 GB of crapware on their consumer systems, they wouldn't have these problems! End of rant. David Veeneman www.veeneman.com

There's one reason I will always build my own machine and install a retail version of Windows, rather than buy any cookie cutter machine from those companies. Plus, so much of the crap they load the machine with is trial-ware anyway, it's just another avenue for marketing to you. ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸

Can some one here tell me why installing my HP PSC 2510 drivers take 391 MB on a minimum install? I don't install any image manipulation software, cartidge status alerts or anything; just the drivers, and it still takes 400 MB! :wtf:  X|

I'm a big fan of Dell, but like you, the first thing I do is reformat (and repartition) the disk and reinstall Windows from scratch. Unfortunately, Dell now makes you pay $10 extra for the OS media. /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Music | Articles | Freeware | Trips ravib(at)ravib(dot)com

That helps to some degree, but wont help when you purchase an HP printer and try to install *only* the print drivers. It is so painfull. :-D Chris Meech I am Canadian. I concur. I have had little or no problem when building my own machines yet at work the Dell's go belly up two or three times a day. Of course, we are using Lotus Notes so that has to take responsibility for at least one of the crashes a day.

When I bought my Compaq laptop a couple of years ago, I told the BestBuy tech idiot NOT to put XP on it, and when I got it home, put Win2K on it. I downloaded the necessary sound/nic drivers from the HP site, and newer drivers from the ATI site, installed them, and never looked back. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. That's where you went wrong. While I've never seen a reliable ink jet printer, I've had way more problems with HP then any other brand, especially with the drivers. The only good printers I've had weighed a ton and made this nice soothing weeeh-weeeh noise as they printed out each line.

Absolutely!! I have gone through numerous ink jet printers from many different brands, but my ancient Panasonic KX-P2023 24-pin dot-matrix printer still chugs along perfectly!! ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸

400 MB and 2.5 hours of installing. Must be all those rootkits they need to install to make sure you don't illegaly *do* something... OT: Which is really funny. You catch a company that uses a rootkit and then they pretend that they didn't know. Right, sure. I believe that.

Is this doable at all?
yes, don't install from the cd that came with the printer. Instead, let XP find the drivers for you. It usually can. Otherwise, go to the HP site and download the printer driver from there. ---sig---

Your mistake was to install the drivers from the CD that came with the printer. Instead, let XP find the drivers for you. It usually can. Or use the generic drivers that come with XP. They're usually good enough unless you need to take advantage of some funky feature of the printer. Otherwise, go to the HP site and download the printer driver from there. ---sig---

Because HP software is crap. I helped a friend about 2 months ago uninstall his HP laserjet printer dirvers, and it took a bit of doing. His PC went from crashing 4 times a day, to non in the past 2 months. He and his wife could not belive that a "high quality" printer could cause those problems. It can if the software/drivers are crap. He was ready to buy a new PC, and his was only 15 months old and was quite high spec. Saved his cash, and he flogged it to some poor sole on E-bay for 80% of what he payed for it. The cycle continues......... HP software is crap. Do not touch. HP hardware is not bad - laptops etc. When buying printers I go for Cannon. They write decent stuff. Epson, equally, do not touch. People ask, whats good about Vista - Answer - user mode printer and audio drivers. They crash, the real source of the problem gets the blame. Can you imagine, would NVidia, or ATI be in business if their drivers were crap? NO!

I'm with you. There's no substitute for doing a clean install yourself. And I run XP only on one machine (in the recording studio) where software insists upon it. Otherwise, Win2K gets the job done without the 175 layers of idiot proofing via the Fischer Price user interface. A program (actually a Windows service) in my laptop was crashing every time, and I was just leaving it for later. When it got too annoying, I decided to fix it. I downloaded Autoruns from SysInternals, removed two HP apps (one for software updates and something else) and everything has been fine since then. I hate HP software! X|
