I want to code - a rant [modified]

So.. let me get this straight: - there is one project manager (you) and one inept coder (the other guy), is it what you said? I think you could decide to code too and you would be able to assume it! ( Because it's not a full time to manage 1 guy :-D )

One point I must have mentioned - I have NOT worked in Java in a professional capacity till now. Then why am I managing it ? - because I have the requisite skills of the related Data Warehousing solution on top of which the current application is built. I have already starting trying to don the Java gloves - but its a 4 year old big application with many patches etc. - you get the picture. Shreekar http://shreekarishere.blogspot.com

Well, if he seems to be a problem more than an assest because of his skill level maybe you should assign him to a simpler project he can work on solo so he can get some more experience. Of course, if that's not your descision to make you're in the deep end. But remember that he probably hates the situation as mucha s you do - we have all been noobs at one point or another and no one likes to be a hassle. So be nice to him :)

I understand that and that's exactly what's made life more miserable - knowing that the guy is not at fault per se, just caught in the situation like me. I guess the HR guys are to blame for this muddle (One feels good to blame others for their situation ;P) Shreekar http://shreekarishere.blogspot.com

I want to code - I want to code - I want to code I want to code - I want to code - I want to code I want to code - I want to code - I want to code....ok now thats out of the way ..... I am managing a Java project with a guy who is out of his depth in Java :sigh: and needs constant hand holding. I used to work in managing and coding .Net projects. Now for last 2-3 months, I am stuck in this situation. It seems to have drained me of my creative chutzpah (if thats the word) and I felt a big need to vent my feelings. On the brighter side, there are 2 more projects coming up which involve Interbase and some unknown front end :omg: and VB-->VB.Net migration, but they seem far in the future. Thanks for letting me rant. Did you get yourself in such a situation unwittingly ? - what did you do to get out of the rut? (leaving the job is too farfetched ;P) Shreekar http://shreekarishere.blogspot.com -- modified at 3:32 Wednesday 31st May, 2006
Sounds like you’re having issues managing the situation; I have worked with people who claim they are not directly able to do their job without my constant consultation. At a certain point you’re going to need to sit him / her down and tellem they need to learn to code on their own. They have a job to do as do you, presumably that person is an adult its time to start acting like one. Give him the coding standards and a Google link, sink or swim baby!
I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

You have my sympathy. I did not get myself into it, HR put me their by assigning people (make that bodies) to open recs. Question: Does the person understand they need to learn? or are they proud of their skills (and that is why they rounded the same integer 5 times, I/you just do not understand the details :sigh: ) Do not worry to much. They will likely be your next sr. manager. "Every new day begins with possibilities. It's up to us to fill it with things that move us toward progress and peace.” (Ronald Reagan)

That is up to you really. You can remember the good old days and/or realize how valuable of a mentor you were. :-D "Every new day begins with possibilities. It's up to us to fill it with things that move us toward progress and peace.” (Ronald Reagan)

That's just beautiful! Do you mind if I use that for my sig? Cheers Steen. "To claim that computer games influence children is ridiculous.
