    so I was about to rebuild my standard XP build, but thought I'd install Vista prior to this - just to see what its all about. what a load of garbage: 1. It's slow. I've got a P4 2.4Ghz with 2Gb Ram. 2. Explorer is chaotic / messy / confusing to use. 3. Explorer constantly hangs and needs restarting. 4. Windows media player is unusable (videos play so slow/choppy its unwatchable) 5. Internet Explorer 7 is horrific, whenever I type in a new URL and hit return, it displays the page in a new window :-E 6. Aero-glass is so slow the system is unusable. I've tried the latest Nvidia beta2 drivers (got a geforce 6800) but no joy. This wasn't a problem on beta-1. 7. Aero-basic is *horrible* 8. Windows-classic has been an afterthought this time around, most of the GUI elements look pretty bad because the whole thing has been optimized for the aero theme. Only thing I like is the new start-menu, with the "run" box at the bottom. neat. And the side-bar, like the clock etc - pretty unobtrusive. All in all, not impressed. If this is the best MS can come up with I predict a growing number of people switching to Mac OSX.

        Every time I have seen a new version of Windows thats how I reacted and after I get used to the new version I realise how better it is. I was so impressed with 98se and was saying thats the best and now that CD is in my showcase. The only problem is upgrading your hardware. The system gets outdated even before your warranty is over :sigh:

                Well, there was no Windows update for 6 years. Isn't that slow enough? (Speaking about MacOSX, there is a new OS release every year...) I'm eagerly waiting for Vista!! And .NET 4! :-D (.NET 4 is even better than .NET 3 !!)

                    I must say that I have had a completely different experience. I installed Vista Beta 2 on my old laptop - Dell Inspiron 8600 (1.5Ghz PM, 1.25gb Ram, 64MB GeForce FX Go5200 graphcis card, 5400rpm 60gb drive). Vista runs at a perfectly acceptable speed... in general faster than the XP install that was there previously but that could be because XP has lots of stuff running (web server, db's etc) in the background. Aero Glass runs perfectly fine even with the crappy graphics card I have and the new explorer is so damn handy – especially the “intelligent” address bar. I have yet to have any hang-ups, crashes, slow downs or any other behaviour that I normally expect from beta software. I do agree that Aero Basic is horrible... it just looks wrong. Haven't looked at classic mode yet - Aero looks so nice that I didn't want to change and the machine was running fast enough anyway. While I'm not 100% sure about the new look of Media Player, it is WAY, WAY, WAY faster than version 10. The only thing I noticed is that it would not play some videos I had - but that was a simple case of letting Media Player download the necessary codecs - something I had to do on XP too. After about 1 hour of using the laptop with Vista Beta 2 I wanted it on my primary desktop machine at home - unfortunately there are no Vista drivers for the Intel Matrix storage chipset on the motherboard of my machine and neither Intel or Dell have been anyway helpful in letting me know when beta drivers will be available. If it wasn't for the broken screen on my laptop (the screen just randomly stops working - and then you have to wait about 20 minutes for it to heat up again) I'd be using it and Vista Beta 2 fulltime.                       After reading Brian's thread, I think that your hardware is too good, and Vista's so smart that after detecting it, it used quite all the CPU load to play Warcraft 71 or Age of Empire 84 in the background. Try and remove some memory and plug your monitor on the VGA card of the motherboard, and enjoy Vista at full speed. ;P ~RaGE();

                        I've had the same experience Brian :). Even though I'm using the Vista-supplied graphics drivers, it's certainly not slow - I haven't even bothered to install nVidia's ones. I haven't experienced any hangs or crashes. I'm quite impressed actually :)

                          Me too. I was expecting it to run really slow on the laptop as I've heard so much about how slow Vista is if you don't have the USS Enterprise's ship computer running under your desk. Definitely not the case. It runs fast, hasn't crashed yet (I expect it will given it's a beta), and I have yet to come across all the annoyances that the new UAC features are supposed to cause. Fingers crossed. :-) Regards, Brian Dela :-) Blog^ Co-author of The Outlook Answer Book... Go on, order^ it today!

                              It's certainly strange that Vista is running so slowly for me....got to be a gfx issue but I can't see why beta2 is giving me problems, but beta1 was ok. Most others I've spoken to have had no problems either. I really wanted to give it a go, just to see what new APIs/features there were to play with. guess it just doesn't like me :sigh:
