Root Canal

I have an abscess on my tooth, I ignored it a long time hoping it would go away, it didn't. Then I washed my mouth out with salt and warm water, then later with a product that tasted like liquorice, it didn't go away, so I went back to ignoring it. Eventually after much harassment by my mother and fiancee, I went to the dentist to see what the problem was. I had already been to the dentist for a check up in June and didn't see why I should have to go again, surely the abscess could wait until next year ? The dentist said I have three options 1. Antibiotics 2. Redo root canal on the tooth thats causing the problem (it had root canal about 6 years ago) 3. Have the tooth out I don't like the idea of having a missing molar, what will I chew on ?, so I don't like option 3. We are trying option 1. but not holding out much hope its going to work. Option 2 is very expensive and unlikely to work as its already failed once. A friend asked me, why not have a artificial tooth put in instead, the dentist didn't mention this option to me, I amn't sure why, perhaps its isn't possible. Does anyone on CP have an artificial molar ?

You can easily do with one missing molar (I write from experience!). My wisdom tooth on that side has since moved a little into the gap but really, you won't miss it. And having it out is probably the quickest and cheapest option.

Hey, i've been in the exact same situation like you. A long time back, I had root canal treatment done on one of my molars. I had to travel soon after the treatment, so the dentist just filled the cavity with some synthetic cement and advised me to get a "cap" fitted by some other dentist at my new location. However, since there was no more any pain, (and ovious procrastination), i soon forgot about the advice. Sure enough, about 5 years later, the same molar had me taking pain killers again. And since i was too busy with studies at the time, i decided to take the less troublesome route and had the molar removed. Trust me, for a long time it felt real weird, and my tongue just couldnt adjust to the gap.. I finally had an artificial tooth installed (really dont know what its called in medical terms), but for that a bridge was made and the top of both the adjacent molars were used as supports. Why not discuss this with your dentist? At CP all we can tell you regarding the subject is our personal experiences, but for sound decision-making advice, the dentist would really be the right person..

Thanks for the information, the dentist was decidedly indecisive. I will ask him about an artifical tooth if the infection doesn't clear up.

I have two missing molars (one from a slap of a hurley (non-Irish will probably not know what this is) to the face that resulted in lots of damage - the other from lots of damage caused by sweet things). You'll survive perfectly fine with one missing molar... unless of course Aliens land and demand that only those with a full set of teeth live... in which case you'd be screwed.

I had the same scenario. I chose to have the root work re-done. Fortunately, the tooth has been healthy since, but I was warned it might not be sucessful. I decided it was worth the risk (and the expense!)

Unfortunately Dentists are crazy money in Ireland ... would be looking at a €900 bill, oh well will have to bite the bullet I think.
