Can anyone recommend a tool (preferably free) to recover files from a corrupted ntfs volume? The hdd in question used to be a bootable volume, however the mbr appears to be corrupt and the os will no longer boot from it. Plugging the disk into a second PC reports it as unformatted (no detectable file-system). There's only a handful of individual files I'd like to recover (not the entire disk), and I've got backups of pretty much everything else. recommendations? is http://www.diskinternals.com/ntfs-recovery/[^] from DiskInternals any good? thanks, James

http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html[^] is free and works pretty good, but slow. It is what I used to recover my broken RAID 1.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk[^] is another one I have used in the past. I had to search for it though. If it is just the partition table and boot record, these could help: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/partitioneditors.shtml[^]

You are very welcome, I hope it helps! And don't forget to backup that disk the MINUTE you see it restored! :) I wish you all the luck in the world and still hope you won't need it!! Jeff

glad to hear it! Always happy when things work out well. I have lost way too many disks to count by now. :)
