Here: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/12/03/uk.spywrap.ap/index.html[^] They say (quote) "Litvinenko's funeral is expected to take place in London, but because of the levels of radiation in his body, the coffin will be sealed, Litvinenko's friend Alex Goldfarb said."

It has a half life of 138 days. That's not particularly high. And it emits Alpha radiation, which isn't strong enough to penetrate the skin (or even a sheet of paper.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polonium#210Po[^]

That's because it was ingested which put it past the skin barrier.

Nope, it was only sealed, i.e. the top was on. Po210 alpha radiation is very weak, armouring the coffin would serve no purpose.

As Colin said, it was ingested - weakly penetrating radiating sources are actually more dangerous when ingested than strongly penetrating sources.

The risk is probably contamination of ground/water. Assuming that he has a very excessive overdose, and the given half life, there#s pretty much potential damage left.
