At the weekend I wiped XP and installed Redhat on my 'experimental' hard disk.
Of the two, I prefer RH for overall performance though XP has some nice bits - fast startup of OS and apps. RH comes with oodles of software - development and office etc. XP has less but WIMP and Messenger are fairly good. Both have handy update programs though Windows Update is only for the OS. XP seems a bit more clever with hardware.
With a blank sheet, I would choose RH over XP but due to legacy hardware and work requirements I'll keep my W2K hard disk going too! Best of both worlds? Or will I waste time jumping between the two?

Nish, I am sypathetic to your cost issue but why stop there? I can download linux versions for free. So why added anything that is not free. By your argument XP should not even be considered. To be conscious that you are ignorant of the facts is a great step towards Knowledge. Benjamin Disraeli
