South west. Should be even better tomorrow. Especially for you being (a) on a farm, and (b) in Tasmania. Did I remember to say: Oh. My. God?

I'll check tomorrow, then. I have about 8 digital cameras in the house, I'll try to take some shots. But, I looked in every direction, and saw nothing. And, as you say, it's not like thre's any other lights or buildings that distract or block my night sky view. How big is it ? Should I expect more than a 5 mm spec ?

Giant comet lights up skies[^] I can see it out my window right now - it's incredible!! Tail probably a handspan long and clearly visible in the sunset. Oh. My. God. Since I left my real camera in Canada I can give you only: Blurry comet![^] And here's a WAAAY better pic[^] And here are some pics from South Africa sent in by Brett Rowbotham: 20 Jan '07 8:57pm[^] 20 Jan '07 9:06pm[^] 20 Jan '07 9:15pm[^]

It's big - maybe a handspan and a half. People in the cafe just across the road could spot it with the street lights on.

No comet, no stars either. Guess it's cloudy again.

I've got three nice pictures taken from Signal Hill in Cape Town on Saturday night. Any place I can put them so I can link to them in a post ? Cheers, Brett
If you send them to me I can upload them, or there's always Flickr. (Is anyone else dismayed they are remaking the movie Flicka?)
cheers, Chris Maunder

No problem, glad I could contribute something. FYI: The first two pictures show the side of Signal Hill with Sea Point at the bottom, the third shows Lions Head in the centre and Table Mountain on the left. Cheers, Brett
Thanks for the additional info. I was curious about the light on Lion's Head. I assume it's the last bits of sunlight.

Glad to see you're enjoying the show! :) I managed to sneek a peak at it here in MN about 2 weeks ago. You know it's one heck of a comet when you can see it and about a 1 degree tail at twilight in the middle of the city. Should you or anyone else snaps some good photos (and I would certainly say Brett's are good), you can send them to http://www.spaceweather.com[^]. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, you can still see the back end of the comet's tail from a very dark location at twilight. (Yes, the tail really is that long.) It should look like faint spikes of light at the horizon. You may need binoculars to pick it out. The Spaceweather site has a number of example photos that should give you an idea of what to look for.
