OK, some dopeheads have been over here painting the buildings all week, and for the most part it's been ok, until today. The guys painted right over a very obvious digital thermometer out on my deck! How the heck am I supposed to read it like that? Actually I can read it from it's base unit inside the house, but I'm sure it's wrong and all messed up now... the humidity sensor is probably damaged beyond repair. It's only worth 50 bucks but it really upsets me cuz it was a Christmas gift from my dad. Is there any way to get the paint off this thing and make it right again or should I ask their boss for my 50 bucks?:(( -- modified at 20:40 Friday 1st June, 2007 It's plastic btw... first of all, it depends on the kind of paint, and if it has dried yet. With wet latex paint, just wipe it off with a warm wet towel and mild detergent, but first take a picture of it to prove to the "dopers'" boss that there's a problem Roswell

Yeah that's the first thing I tried with my finger nail and such, but it's totally dry exterior latex sprayed on. It may have happened a couple days ago because my deck doors have been taped over the whole time. I might be able to take the thing apart and fix it... it's the cover plastic that's painted and I assume all the innards are still groovy. I'm mostly irritated by the thoughtlessness of these guys... they painted over other stuff too, like large parts of a tree, part of a chair, and all the innards of a box of wires when the cover was sitting right there. The buildings look slightly better though.

:wtf: Sounds like the guys worked with lead-containing, solvent-based paints for too long ...nothing short of poisoning (except laziness perhaps) can make such a vegetable out of a person:rolleyes: If the you can take the thing apart and just have the plastic box off separately, you can maybe try soaking it in some rubbing alcohol and then rubbing it with the back side (melamine fiber side) of a kitchen sponge... What will you say if they insist that you should have removed it prior to the painting? Don't expect the boss to just hand over 50 bucks without a fight.

It's a condo, and I have no say in the matter. These guys are definitely not pros. I was a contractor for a couple years and I know this type of crew. Hopefully they won't be hired again. I am going to have to go trim the tree though and probably re-paint my chair. I could have taken the chair inside and it's older than dirt so I don't care much, but obviously the tree couldn't be moved. I wouldn't be surprised to find out these guys painted people's cars and stuff too. I had a guy drop a ladder on a car once... his buddy's car. That's the kind of guys I'm talkin about here... you have to remind them not to paint their glasses, cuz then they take them off and paint their eyeballs instead. I did figure out that I can get a part replacement for 20 bucks plus some shipping, so I'm just going to do that and call it fixed. They taped over some other stuff, so I don't understand why they missed random things here and there, and this was obvious... it's a big white thing with an LED readout on it. Totally strange.

Yeah that's the main reason I posted this, because I know that paint thinner would just make the problem worse, and all I have around the house is probly some nail polish remover and some "Energine", which is "100% Naphtha"? I might have some sewing machine oil, but that would hurt the plastic too I think.

A couple of years ago, the building management company at work decided to repaint the emergency exit doors. Being stingy, they found the cheapest guy to do the undercoat, and a different guy to do the topcoat. Neither could do both coats for less than the price of 1 coat each  So, being the cheapest guys available, they rock up, in the middle of the work day, with spray guns, on a windy day. These doors exit onto the carpark, and there were lots of cars parked there. My car was less than a metre away from the door. Being the cheapest guys available, they don't think to ask anyone to move their car. Later that evening, after work we all filter out into the carpark to find quite a lot of cars sporting a fine mist of white paint. It took 11 months to get the whole deal sorted out, we gave our insurer's the building management company's details, who promptly blamed the painters, and it degenerated from there into a stoush between the painters to see who's paint it was. I managed to get a free respray of my car's bonnet (hood to you US people) and the rest of the car professionally detailed. Looked as good as new, but it was still a hell of a lot of hassle!

                            I have no blog...

I know a little of how you feel. The windows in my place need replacing but the landlord is too tight to spend that sort of money so he sent a guy round to paint the outside of the frames with creasote. The guy turned up 7:30am, eyes already crossed, fixed grin and brush waiving aimlessly in the air. By the time I got back from work he'd left, having creasoted my front door shut so that I as good as had to break it in. It must be the paint/creasote fumes :wtf:

Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

I'd call that criminal damage! Give them the option of paying up quietly or...

What will you say if they insist that you should have removed it prior to the painting? Don't expect the boss to just hand over 50 bucks without a fight.

If its plastic any kind of alchohol based product will screw it up. Theres a product called Goof Off that might work, if warm water doesn't. There are two versions of this product. The original is an alchohol based product and you DO NOT want this! But they recently came out with a non-alchohol version and I've used it and it works pretty good. Haven't tried it on paint on plastic but should work. Good Luck Mike

I wouldn't say totally strange, but totally retarded. The people who did the paint job must have been the lowest bidder for the job and having some dopeheads do the job can very well happen with the lowest bidder.
