Battle of the DSLRs

Sorry for dropping my post without explanations. So, what makes me say that is a thorough analysis of a few reviews, one of my favorite being the one of the French shop "FNAC". The differences are minimal, but the Canon seems to be better for
- handling "fast" chained shots (what I mean is taking continuous shots of something moving fast, like a rallye car for instance), the first shot comes quicker than for the Nikons, and are more regular
- the pictures taken with the built-in flashs are better. You can forget this if you use another flash light, but it can matter if you do not want to re invest 275 euros for a decent flash.
- color rendering seems to be nearer to reality with the Canons in the predefined modes ("portrait","child","landscape"). Again, if you make extensive use of A,S, or M, this does not matter.
As for the rest, Paul is right, it is a matter of feeling it alright in the hands. I personally owe a Nikon D50, because it was the best price/quality ratio when I bought it, but I reckon that the EOS350D is better, for having tested it (two friends of mine have bought it).

I don't agree: 1) Shutter lag in modern DSLRs is indistinguishable so speed would amount to focusing times which in turn relies mostly on your lens and its focusing drive. Consumer lenses are of equal quality regardless if it is Nikon or Canon. With pro level lenses there are differences in which case you should choose camera after what you aim at shooting with (no pun intended) or simply carry both which many do. 2) Built in flash is ridiculously poor regardless which brand you choose. Canon or Nikon; buy a flash if you intend to use flash. 3) Neither brand produces colorimetrically correct images in JPEG mode. In RAW mode it is pointless to talk about as there is no in-camera correction. Buying a consumer level DSLR amounts purely to personal preferences and to some extend, so does professional cameras. The most important point to consider, is that the camera feels natural so you can focus on taking good pictures instead of operating your camera. Something that most reviews seems to take into account by being blatantly partial but ultimately fail to mention. One thing worth mentioning regarding the Nikon D40 is that it requires lenses with built-in motor. Other Nikon cameras have a servo drive to operate AF lenses without motor. It is not technically interesting, but it does limit the range of compatible lenses.

Yeah I've read your posts. Frankly I thought CP members are all techie ppl. Didn't know there were a few autistic artists here.:doh: I've been pondering here[^] for photographer's preferences and nikon and canon are pretty much equal. darn i apologize for any redundant statements. I just want to cover every angle before I buy.

Hi! I've been browsing the net for nikon vs nikon, nikon vs canon, nikon vs canon vs pentax, etc but I still can't figure out what to buy. My top 3 are nikon d80, nikon d40x and canon 400d. They're all pretty equal in terms of functions and performance although their prices does take its toll. I was just wondering what, in your opinion, would a 1st time DSLR user better buy considering the last film SLR I owned was a nikon f60. to top things off I still have 2 lenses left with me, a sigma standard lens and a nikkor 35-135mm lens. I'm planning to buy this weekend. Your opinions would really matter...Thanks all in advance!:-D

I have a 350D (the predecessor to the 400D) and I have to say it's excellent. It has coped admirably with everything I've thrown at it (including low flying military jets!) and if I had to replace it today I'd almost certainly go for the 400D. I can't speak for the Nikons, but they have a good rep too. Personally I'd wander down to your nearest camera store, try them all out and see what you think. :)

I used to use a 350 film camera and almost got a 350D until the 400D came out and I thought I'd risk my overdraft on it. Can't fault it at all, it copes well even on fully automatic.

I don't really know. My father changed from Pentax to Nikon. Canon was too in the tie for his new system, but he like the Nikon (with more metal parts in these days) to the Canon. But both are in general (to my knowledge) good systems.
All the label says is that this stuff contains chemicals "... known to the State of California to cause cancer in rats and low-income test subjects."

Yes, of course ;) Nikon was _the_ system to get if you wanted a SLR years back, with Olympus as the second-best brand. Canon is the "new kid on the block" when it comes to prof SLR's, but today they sell a LOT more prof cameras than Nikon does.

Have you held any of those three in your hands? They are so close in features and performance that it really comes down to handling and personal preference. Some people find the 400D too small for their hands while others think it is just perfect. Don't look at the specs. anymore. You've already narrowed down your range. Now you can choose based on how it feels in your hands, what feels most comfortable and which is easiest for you to operate.

hehehe, you know, I never thought of it that way. One of the engineers here loves his Canon, I thought it too small, and love my Nikon. The cannon just felt like the Point-n-shoot camera I had before which was "okay" but it always felt small too. Part of it, I think, comes from handling my grandfather's old 35mm SLR, the Nikon was just more of what I was accustomed to holding. Perhaps if I grew up never handling the older SLRs, maybe I would really like the smaller cameras. :)

Good answer! :-D OT: Do you happen to know of a reliable camera repair shop? My Olympus primary lens has developed a roughness in adjustment, owing to the extremely fine, ubiquitous dust in the air here. It has a bit of a scratchy feel when rotating the zoom in and out, and I'm looking for someone reliable and experienced to give it a good cleaning, without cleaning out my savings. Any thoughts/recommendations?

My Olympus primary lens has developed a roughness in adjustment, owing to the extremely fine, ubiquitous dust in the air here. It has a bit of a scratchy feel when rotating the zoom in and out, and I'm looking for someone reliable and experienced to give it a good cleaning, without cleaning out my savings. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Have you done the flickr.com search by camera? I.E. search for all photos by camera model and see samples of a wide variety of photos taken with each model? Also read the exhaustively detailed reviews at dpreview.com for each model?
