    My point is, writing and maintaining auto testing scripts can get more complicated than writing and maintaining the applications, which defeats the purpose of using the tool, and which just replaces the original problems with new problems.

    Have you actually experienced that? I've experienced the opposite, and if a test becomes too much of a hassle then yes, sometimes it is easier to delete and re-write it.
