Development Laptop
-
Hi all, I guess this is a question that is asked a lot, but I just cannot make up my mind. I really like developing on a desktop but require the ease and accessibility of a laptop. So what laptop would be the best for development purposes, and be capable of running Visual Studio 2K5 | 2K8 with a database in the background with some ease. Thanks in advance Regards, Someone looking for a good laptop :)

Just my opinion mind, but I'd go for something with 17"+ of screen real estate. I have an Inspiron 9200 which does a reasonable job with VS 2005 and SQL Server running in the background, although I did upgrade it to 2 gigs of ram and I went for 7200 rpm HDD (almost unheard of in Laptop circles) as battery power/conservation were not that vital to me. I expect the newer dual core models are even better.
"On one of my cards it said I had to find temperatures lower than -8. The numbers I uncovered were -6 and -7 so I thought I had won, and so did the woman in the shop. But when she scanned the card the machine said I hadn't. How many years ago was that? My MBP came with a 7200rpm.

I'd recommend the MacBook Pro series from Apple. Runs Windows nicely. p.s. What the heck is up with the voting on the forums? Red and grey all over, worse than a soggy newspaper.

Core2 duo, fastest that you can afford 17" or better, don't skimp on the resolution if you can afford it. 7200RPM drives, don't skimp if you don't have to. If you must go 5400RPM for battery life, go hybrid for slightly better speed. Buy an extra battery, no really. If you want a dev laptop you end up with lowered battery life and although you will rarely use the batter, usually using wall power (being mobile, not necessarily wireless dev environment), but you will use it on occasions and then you will be glad you have it. If you know you will never use it, drop the extra, but otherwise it comes in handy on the rare occassions of battery only. At work we buy alienware, though the price is expensive, partly for the name. Alienware is now owned by Dell, so they are really Dell now. Only difference with Alienware tends to be higher resolutions, premium components and detailed testing. Alienware sells to the gaming crowd, not dev, so you can even have the tester play your favorite game on your laptop and give you a report on how well it will perform. For the gaming crowd that is great for the dev folks, not so much. Though if you think right and pick your components you can get an Alienware equivalent from about half the laptop vendors.

December 2004, if memory serves - the stock HDD was 4800 RPM!

someone bleed on your newspaper? I must live in a small town, we still do B&W! of course this reminds me of an old series of jokes from growing up in the dark ages.... what's black and white and red all over? ( a newspaper: spelled 'read' all over). Alternatives: A skunk walking through red paint. A zebra with a nose bleed. The CP lounge (also works with the spelling 'read' for a double entendre when the univoter is around)

What is with 17" laptops? I find even a 15" too big. Your battery life will suffer, your back will suffer, you have to find more room (planes, trains and automobiles etc.) and you are invariably forced to carry it around in a Humvee sized backpack. I have two 19" monitors at work that I plug my laptop into everyday and do the bulk of my work on. Everywhere else the 15" screen suffices and makes it easy to slip into a thin neoprene case that can tuck under my arm and into seat-back pockets. If you work at home then have some monitors at home. Ideally I'd like a 12"/13" screen to make it even more portable.
