    Yet the book still sells extremely well. The language in the examples may have changed (they sound very formal for modern ears or readers) but the principle is sound.

      True - It taught me a few things. And I cringe when people break the "rules" in the book. I still do sometimes, but much less than before as I am more aware of what I am saying or reading.

              It's been a while, so I don't remember the specifics, but I walked away with the sense of "if you sincerely look out for the best interests of others, more often than not they'll do the same for you." Seems like a pretty decent approach to living. Of course, those who thing this stuff is smarmy or manipulative typically overlook the "sincerely" part. Mind you, not everyone is a good person who will reciprocate or refrain from abusing your goodwill, but I've found that I generally fare well if I just try to treat others decently.
