IE8 annoyance

If you dont shutdown properly (like when the power cuts), IE8 simply discards all your cookies... :doh:

IE 7 does that to my history sometimes, never seen it happen with cookies though. My condolences.

I really don't understand why people still use IE with all the nicer and faster browsers out there. Be careful with the cookie monster :laugh:

User apathy. "Why learn a new UI when I already know how IE6 works". Going forward IE8 claims to be able to run ajax several times faster than IE7 or FF2. Assuming that's not marketing BS unless FF reacts fast it could find itself loosing market share.

Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull

User apathy. "Why learn a new UI when I already know how IE6 works". Going forward IE8 claims to be able to run javascript several times faster than IE7 or FF2. Assuming that's not marketing BS unless FF reacts fast it could find itself loosing market share. If it does it could be the deathnell for other browsers (opera, safari, konquerer, etc) that refuse to wake up and smell the ajax.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 is 5x faster than IE7, 3x faster than FF2[^] :-) I'm using it right now and it's definitely the fastest I've seen - beating even Opera, which is definitely a feat. I haven't tried IE8 yet, but I should, just for curiosity's sake...

Unless opera9.5 is much faster than 9.2, I have to question that benchmarks real world relevance. For non ajax pages all of the above are fast enough. Opera 9.2x is painful with anything more complex than gmail or googlemaps without using the route drag/drop. I'll give 9.5 a try in a bit but since they never mentioned improved ajax my gut feeling is it's going to be the same old engine that has me on the verge of switching.

Looks like I'm going to have to eat my words. I just DLed the opera9.5 beta and googlemaps is actually performing well when draging a route around the map. In the highly scientific user perception test it's about the same as FF draging routes, scrolling, and zooming in google maps. Gmail results were the same. A third highly ajax intensive site I intended to use as a test location is currently falling over. I'll post an update once it's working again. I'll be doing a bit more usability testing but I think I might be upgrading to teh beta in the near future (default was a side by side install).
