Earth Hour
-
I decided to Spend this earth hour out and about in Sydney. Unfortunately I think I counted about 3 stores that had their lights off, and they were closed. Kind of disappointing how little Sydney gets behind an event.

Kind of sad how people get behind a BS event like this and then think "I've done my part." Marc

So people turn the lights off for an hour, and during that hour light every candle they have in the house to promote the cause of lowering carbon emissions. Lowering non-renewable energy use is incredibly important but it just seems to me that this particular way of promoting it wasn't fully thought through.

But candlelight is a nice way to spend an hour or two. As far as lowering the country's carbon footprint, the USA needs to turn off Las Vegas and the Orlando theme parks - permanently.

I just decided to contribute and also register Here[^] but then I just looked at the open project at my VC6 that uses GPS to show current position on a map and in the next few days will run on two trains and keeps all the monitors that used to be off, unless when showing a movie, turned on during the travel, so I didn't. I think even turning off my houses light or my pc all the year, can't help any longer. :sigh:

I don't totally agree. While the actual night itself may not be the cure all for our environmental troubles, however I think it is excellent to have stats like "This one hour will stop the equivalent amount of useless gas being released into the atmosphere as stopping the web 2.0 conferences and mac worlds for an entire year!". This let's the default citizen get an idea of how easy it is to make a difference, even if it's a small one. I have no position on either side of the global warming debate, however I don't think lowering our power consumption could possibly be a bad thing and this is a decent attempt at raising awareness.

What's sadder is when they don't and think someone else did it for them. Just sayin'

Businesses need to turn off their lights during the day and keep then off at night when no one's there.

Nah, I just illuminate the house by turning on all the flat panel screens and setting the desktop image to all white. But hey, I'm doing my bit, I turned off all my 15W florescent bulbs! (ok, now that we have a rant icon, we need a sarcasm icon, right?) Marc

"Hey!" she called out as the Syndey event was mentioned on the radio. "Tonight at eight we're gonna turn off the lights for Earth Hour." No. There's no reason for that. What, we're gonna sit in the dark for an hour? Go to bed five hours early? "Yes, we are. It's important. Besides, we can sit and watch a movie together" Ah, right. We'll kill the 60-watt lamp bulb and fire up the 400-watt TV+DVR+stereo combo. she rolls her eyes and stomps away...

Come on, it's an empty gesture. Getting a law passed to mandate LED lightbulbs would be fare more useful and every hour would be "earth hour" at that point.

Hello mate, We turned the lights off, closed the curtains so the neighbours didnt see and continued watching the telly. Whats news with you?
Not too much. Work is piling up like a Microsoft bug list but I'm managing. Thinking I might need to go through to the States in a few months to do a major presentation which could be fun. How's life on your end?

In SA it just gets done for us. In January, we had up to three 2 hour planned outages a day. Now we're down to one or two a week.

Sounds energy consuming.... Have you made sure to power down for at least an hour each week?
