I can understand computers in and out, everything from how the hardware works to software development, but networking has always been a tough subject to me.
The Digital World. It is an amazing place in which we primitive humans interact. Our flesh made this synthetic machine. You see, we are so smart, we know a lot of stuff. We were grown from cells that came from the universe, which the matter and physics I'm typing in it is amazing how the universe is working. Human life is very amazing. How I experience this sh*t its like wow.

I'm sure. If you're as good at programming as you say why is it you are working as a fast food cook?

Peer to peer networks are relatively simple... what's going wrong? Didn't my info for you in the Lounge help??

Nothing is going wrong, but I'm trying to figure out the ins and outs of networking because I am curious, but its all so complex. For instance, my ISP assigns me an IP address for which other computers can connect to mine, but then more than one computer can access that internet connection, wheather it be through a gateway or a router. Each of my LAN devices has an IP address, then there are default gateways and all this and that.

It doesn't matter if I am the best programmer in the world. I have to spend thousands of dollars on some receipt that says I have been educated from a school which takes years to get. Then most employers require around 5 years of experience working as a programmer for a company.

Your ISP assigns you an IP address from their public IP address allocations. Your NAT enabled router has an inbuilt DHCP server that allocates a private IP address to each computer on your peer to peer network - PRIVATE being the operative word. It will be in the form 192.168.0.nnn, or 10.0.0.nnn - both of these are dedicated to private networks. The router takes information from each computer and passes it to the internet through your public IP address (to your ISP). Try running the following from a command window: tracert www.ford.com.au It will show you the path your packets take to reach the www.ford.com.au website. The "internet" knows nothing about your subnet. It stops at your public IP address (ie: at your router). Your router takes over from there, multicasting the information to each computer on the network, and the one that wants the information takes it and uses it. Hope this helps.

So if my router has a 4 port gigabit switch with a computer connected to each one, and a 10mbit WAN, and two computers are sending data as fast as they can to eachother, and a 3rd computer is downloading a file from the internet at a full 10mbit, the two other computers bandwidth will be reduced by 10mbit because the data from the WAN is being sent to all the computers?

Depends how smart your switch is... if it's cluey, it will figure out which computer is after the information when the first packet is sent through, then direct it there. If not, it will simply push it along and the computer that wants it will grab it. Of course, if you have 4 computers connected through a gigabit switch, and one computer is maxing out your internet connection, the other computers will be bandwidth restricted. Given that the minimum connection between computers on your switch would be 100meg (assuming not all computers have gigabit cards in them), and your WAN connection is seemingly topping out at 10 meg, your other computers won't really notice all the packets flying around unless they are also trying to access the internet. Peer to peer comms would still have a minimum of 90meg to play with... In most peer to peer networks, the bandwidth restriction is between the ISP and the router, not between the router and the computers!! Anyway, I have a meeting to go to, so good luck with it!

Oh no you don't! Lets I have 4 computers hooked up to a 4 port router with the modem hooked up on the WAN. On each computer I have a program listening for something on a specific port. A far away computer sends a packet to the IP address my ISP gives me, it sends it on the port the programs are listening on. Will the program on each computer see that packet, even on one of those smart routers?

I'm no network expert, but I think the router fowards ports to a specific IP. On my router, for example, I have to forward ports to my local IP's. So if I want to open port 42000 on 192.168.0.25... Actually, I'd be interested in the answer to that too. I wonder if it's possible to forward, say, port 42000 to 192.168.0.25 AND 192.168.0.30... Hmmmmmmmmm.

Vote Democrat, get a government-backed entrepreneur loan and knock yourself out. Seriously, if you have a viable idea, talk to your bank. Present yourself like a respectable citizen with a well thought-out plan. Lots of institutions are interested in business loans.
