asp.net and vs2008...

ok this is gonna sound like im really bashing the products but im really not ... im trying to do a project with them for the first time and im struggling to understand how its all supposed to work first of all vs2008 is slow as molasses to the point of being almost unusable ... trying to build the simplest web page is so convoluted i almost cant quite believe it ... is it really so complex? why? i have a dual core machine with a 7200 200gb hdd and 2gb ram with a good nvidia video card ... this is really how one builds web sites with asp.net or is there a simpler way? (please tell me there is an easier way!!) again im not bashing the products im genuinely asking if it really has to be so cumbersome :|

I've not used VS2008 for ASP.NET yet. Building a big site in 2005 was very slow, I recall.

We have recently converted a fairly large site across to VS2008 - it does seem a bit more convoluted than VS2003 was. Speed seems a bit better though, but that could just be from starting afresh... Oh, and the new machine...

I have found that some systems run VS pathetically regardless of the version number. My current machine here is very slow in starting and operating VS2005 yet older machines at places I work often scream. I don't really get it. I think this summer I am going to get a quad-core upgrade and knowing my luck everything will run slower.

VS 2008 is unusable, not only in your machine. Recently, I bought a new computer just to have Windows Vista and VS 2008, but I had to downgrade to VS 2005 because VS 2008 is a pain in the ass to work with. I still miss VS 6, sniff...

jah ive come to the conclusion that working it without using vs is the better way to go ... just build the ui and then write the code behind using a simple text editor ... ive found a few articles on that and it seems way more "webby" and easier i also miss the vc6 env ... best dev tool ms ever made imo :sigh:

Strange: I have it on both an XP and Vista machine and have had no trouble with it at all and much prefer it to 2005. I don't understand where you say it is convoluted to build a web page? In what way? My only gripe is that I'd like to be able to add a non-project project: in other words a folder (NOT solution items which suck) that may contain documents or other stuff I want close by but not in. I know I can sort of do it with a faux project but it would be nice to have.

Just checking my multi-tasking madness and I'm running three instances of VS 2008, two of VS 2005 (plus Photoshop, Sql Management Studio, Visio, Outlook, Excel, Word, 11 IE instances and Notepad) without performance problems. And my build is a few years old; Pentium 4, 3.2GHz with 2.5GB RAM running XP sp2. I don't think that your performance issues are due to VS, but IIWY I'd check what you are running in the background. Your description is symptomatic of an infected system. As to the product: built in FxCop and unit testing are huge wins for me and the IDE is merely an evolution of VS 2005; but if you've been using VS since Visual Interdev (like some old bugger I see in the bathroom mirror each morning) then its a struggle to remember whether this is productive! I seem to recollect that VI/EVE was a better text editor, but it is madness to suggest that a text editor with no code completion and even the 7 basic refactoring tools available in VS 2008 is a better option. Buy RAM, check for viruses.

Do you run with integrated source control? I'm bound to clear case and I find that's a huge source of slow downs - particularly when the intranet bogs down. Shut off the start page and the dynamic web updating of it. It's all that connectedness that really kills it for me

I have a machine similar to yours and it's slow as heck. I think it's from building so much of the IDE on the .NET framework.

Fortunately I can still use VS 6. It's way faster than the sluggish .NET-infected products. It generates faster executables too.

it just seems so cluttered for making a web page ... i guess im used to working with just a text editor and the raw html for the interface ... ide's and web pages dont really go together for me ... im trying to use asp.net without the ide and it seems more natural for me so far :)
