Ideas on whats wrong with my PC

Vista Does crashes Server 2008 crashes Windows XP Service Pack 3 crashes Each with a parity check BSOD... I have just had to reinstall Windows XP to bring my pc back to life! Windows XP Service Pack 2 runs absolutly fine, no problem... Is there any tools I can use to review my hardware etc... Something probably not compatible with Windows XP SP3, Vista and Server 2008... Things I have tried.. Removing Hardware... (running the system on bare bones..) Removing Ram Different combinations of Ram (slots etc..), even running with 1gig Reseating Cards, Memory, CPU etc.. I want to atleast install SP3, but it seems like the problem is probably related between Operating Systems. Thanks, James

Mitch HedbergVista has a memory test program on its install disk. Boot from the Vista install disk, and choose to run the memory test.

I tried that.. I think the line at the bottom is amusing, something along the lines of "If this program seems like it is not running, it is still running" What if it has crashed? do I just wait FOREVER for it to maybe finish... it got to 8% and hung there for about half an hour.. the ESC key did not register either (the cancel operation key) I don't want to get into the "just 5 more mintues routine.." where I end up wasting 3 days on it stuck on 8%

No, just different slots.. If the memory was bad why would it run on XP Sp2? James

Mitch HedbergHow are you doing these installs? Install, uninstall or are you wiping the drive? Try a different new drive if you can.

Well, I have tried all the minimum configuration of ram, including single chips of 1gig, so that would mean all of them would be bad.. if it was the memory? I think I will leave the memory program running over night, see if that throws up anything! Cheers, James

*grin* only if it's running Vista. My Mac is so stable, it's like a whole different world. XP is also fine for me, by and large.

Hang on!!! Parity?? RAM in PCs these days don't use parity, that got dropped years ago to save money. The only option now is ECC (Error Checking and Correction), and that is usually only used in servers.

Mitch HedbergThe problem could be AMD cpu with VIA chipsets. AMD CPU with Via chipset will not install XPP service pack 3. AMD and XP service pack issues are not yet resolved at this point. Micro soft too busy selling Vista. Amd and MS do not want to fix the issues. You are out of luck. Try some blarb on Via Arena chipset.

Mitch HedbergGiven the new disk encryption and such my guess is a bad HDD or MBR. You could try "fdisk /fixmbr" at the command prompt and see how it goes. But I believe you have a bad HDD or corrupt sectors. Totally a SWAG. But if you put a different HDD in there (if that's an option) do you have the problem?
