Why Enrollment in CS/EE Majors decling

Why CS/EE enrolment are declining in Can/USA. We have heard time geting any decent .net People. Every one wants 60K and can do nothing.

Is it enrollment that's down? I hear it's difficult to get employees in many sectors across western Canada because the economy is still very good. There's just not enough employees to go around. Cheers, Drew.

I thought one of the problems in the US is that there are more college educated people than the number of jobs requiring such. And this is not helped by the influx of immigrants who study here and end up staying. As for CS and EE I am not sure. I know the CS market was bad a few years back but is rebounding. John

shrug, people follow the money and jobs. And right now all people hear are about all the jobs going overseas or how companies are bringing offshore people inhouse on visa instead of hiring people in the US. If I were just starting out in this market, I'm not sure I'd go into programming either.

It's a cycle. 1) IT market needs jobs, salaries increase. 2) 17/18 year olds hear about the high salaries so decide they'll take CS at uni 3) The increase in people taking CS degrees takes 3-6 years to reach employment level. 4) The market is now flooded with recent graduates in CS so the demand starts to fall along with the salaries. 5) The 17/18 year olds hear about the fall in salaries and decide to take business studies or media. 6) The drop in people taking CS degrees takes 3-6 years to reach the market. 7) The reduction in CS graduates boosts demand. Salaries rise. Rinse and repeat. What's important is that the flexibility in the number of people seeking employment is from people who only trained in the subject only because of the prospect of high salaries. The number of people who are genuinely interested remains roughly constant, thus for those of us who take the time to learn, improve and be good, there will always be available jobs. And for companies looking for really good programmers, they are always out there, it's just the quantities of rubbish programmers varies. Just my theory. :)

We have a similar problem here. Software development managers want $100K, and they don't know anything about software development and they think they can get good developers for the same wage as a union baggage handler. We are now outsourcing all management to children in Bangladesh. They are a hell of a lot cheaper, and since most of them can't speak English, productivity has soared.
