Given the current predilection of piracy round the horn of Africa I make the following suggestions. The country in which the ship is registered should send it's navy to blast the pirates out of the sea. Piracy is currently seen in international law as an act of war, so the country from which the pirates come should be bombed. If necessary sink the vessel they have boarded in order to stop them. Do not alter the status of Piracy to Criminal Act, like the British Government is trying to do, it will only mean killing pirates becomes a crime and we will need to give them a fair trial.

Would you recommend sinking a hijacked oil tanker laden with oil?

Yep! Instead of blowing them out of the water we have to pay to imprison them, then offer them asylum cos they would be shot if we sent them back to Somalia!

actually the problem is that when we return them to Somalia absolutely nothing happens, and they're free to get another speedboat, a half dozen kalishnicopies and go back to work asap. The bigger problem is that the countries that the ships belong to/are crewed by almost universally choose to pay the ransom rather than risk a hostage being killed. Damn fools have forgotten the first law of the DaneGeld.

Don't worry about the British Government and rules, just outsource the real work to India: India: Pirate 'mother ship' left in flames[^].

Once you see the Indian ship in this link (note the large forward gun turret), and given the fact that the Somali pirates were threating it using nothing more than RPG's, it's clear the pirates are either morons or suicidal, or both. :wtf: Maybe we need to bring back the old US PT boats from WW 2 (not the wood versions though!). They were very fast, carried multiple 50 cals, and sported 2 - 4 torpedo tubes as well. Or just send some Navy Tomcats over and eradicate them! http://www.pt-boat.com or http://flickr.com/search/?q=PT+Boat

Except for a few in museums there are no navy tomcats left. They were retired a few years ago and then ran through a giant shredder to make it impossible for Iran to acquire any usable parts as scrap, or by looting the bone yard.

Given that the rules for immigration are that it must be claimed at the first border the immigree (?) comes to, the UK is an island and very few asylum seekers come in by boat from their original country, we shouldn't have a problem. However, the PC brigade wouldn't dare allow the government to enforce it! The Canaries have an issue with boat travelling seekers, they're thrown into a tin shed at the airport and sent back within 24 hours if caught... Neil

It's not the PC brigade - it's the UN convention on refugees brought in about 1950 - it was in response to the fact that governments had refused entry to another group of people during the Second World War... some of the details escape me...
