I'm off to a meeting now, so here's the first 3 that jumped out at me. 3. Faster Pussycat's Poison Ivy. Not their best track, but a real good one. 7. Hells Bells - AC/DC. 21. Metal Health - Quiet Riot.

Now, the big question, if a cover band was going to play those songs, would you go and see them ?
Yes.
"WPF has many lovers. It's a veritable porn star!" - Josh Smith
Well done. I don't think anyone else got three, and I was amazed that Mick got the Angels and not the AC/DC song ( surely one of their biggest songs ? ). What's your fave FP track ? I have the tab book for the second album and I have all but decided to learn poison ivy ( it's the only song on this list I don't already play ).

Not bad..... 19 - wrong. Do Skid Row even have a song called that ? ( I am reminded that Doctor Doctor should have been one of these songs tho ). Yeah, I love Udo, he has a cool name and a very cool, if unusual voice.

I'm not suprised though, you hear nothing but metal while I don't listen to metal at all.

Stand up to be seen. Speak up to be heard. Shut up to be appreciated.

I would go and see that cover band! The first gig I ever went to was a friends band doing covers, and they did Am I Evil. To be pedantic Am I Evil is by Diamond Head; Metallica just covered it for the B-side of Creeping Death. I think Metallic are one of the best covers bands in the world. They started out doing some obsure covers when they didn't have many songs of their own, and just didn't introduce them so people would assume they were their songs. (I remember reading that in an interview with Hetfield in Kerrang in the eighties). I first got into quite a few bands by tracking down the originals of some of Metallica's covers like Killing Joke (The Wait) and The Misfits (Green Hell / Last Caress).
Words fade as the meanings change, but somehow, it don't bother me.
Yeah, I accepted Metallica for Am I Evil, b/c that's the version I play ( Kirks solo is tighter and just different in places, and the arrangement is also different in a few places ). Yes, I got all the Diamond Head albums, and I also got into Budge via Metallica.

Well, the Metallica song is a cover.... The reason those bands are huge is that they WRITE amazing songs. Being able to play them is not a great feat by comparison. Playing them well requires practice, that's all.

I disagree it's not merely playing the notes correctly but emulating the performance that is required for a successful cover. The whole thing with songs like Sweet Child Of Mine is not that the lyrics are particularly great or clever or that the music can't be played by anyone else but that the original performance is simply unrepeatable, no one talented enough is both mad enough and motivated enough nor ever likely to be. the sheer manic extremity of great heavy rock performances is what sets these songs apart, not the lyrics or the written down music, for all that many Metallica songs can be very intellectual, they're the exception that proves the rule.
