The Day The Earth Stood Still (remake) [modified]
-
I just rewatched the original last night, and I saw the trailer for the new one a couple of weeks ago. Between the as-usual-over-the-top special effects and Keanu Reeves acting like a dead piece of wood, it's probably going to suck. I might pay $2.95 to watch it when it comes to cable, but I'm not going to spend $37* to see it in the theater. * $10 admission for me, $10 admission for my daughter, $7.50 for a large popcorn, $4.75 each for two small Diet Cokes.

Gary, Just curious if you have the original on tape (DVD), did you see it on TV or is it available on-line? I was going to check Comcast On-Demand's Free Movies, figured it would be in there, but I'm wondering where you found it. Thanks, D.

Did you know, kids these days have aluminum foil hats? I kept thinking they were trying to improve their reception, but it certainly didn't seem to be working very well.

Sorry, forgot how talk like this can affect people at your age. Maybe you should go lay down, so you don't over exert your heart.

10,000 out of work screenwriters, but Hollywood insists on rehashing stuff that's already been done... Didn't even know there was a remake but to me, the old B&W stuff presents not only the movie, but a snapshot of who we were at the time (which is, of course, reflected in the plot). I didn't care for the Tom Cruise version of War of the Worlds (yes, Dorothy, all life has become tainted with dismal, depressing shades of corrosion green, even the clear blue sky), so I doubt very much that I'd care for the current whiny, fatalistic, manic depressive Hollywood's version of yet another classic. Hollywood, take note: if you're so convinced that life sucks and the future is doomed, please follow the example of prototypical grunge rockers and go blow your head off so you don't disturb the rest of us (preferably, someplace far away from me so that I don't have to deal with the noise or the mess). The rest of us are busy trying to enjoy life, thanks. And actually, the Earth was flat until I watched Neil Armstrong walking on the moon in 1969, on a little B&W TV with rabbit ears and the requisite aluminum foil.

I'm curious who here has seen, or plans to go see, the remake? If you've seen the remake, what did you think of it? I've read mixed reviews, seems to me that most of them fall into one of the following categories: #1: Reviewer likes film, never saw original #2: Reviewer doesn't like film, saw original #3: Reviewer hasn't seen film, hasn't seen original, keeps to self, has no friends, likes nothing. Admittedly, it's been a LOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG time since I saw the original movie, and I remember nothing about it, other than watching it on the Family's little B&W set (yes, I know it was a B&W film, but so was our TV at that time). For those of you too young to understand this: back then, the World was only in Black & White. The Gods that controlled the world at the time, we called them the "ancient ones", saw our plight, and in their infinite wisdom, placed numbers on all the things in the world. They assigned the task of colorization to a company called Crayola, who, until that time, only had a white and black crayon. The ancient ones taught Crayola the magic of the prime colors, and they quickly took to the task. This became known as the Color By Numbers Era. Write it down. Tell your friends. Make blog. You'll be cool. ... oh, and the Earth was flat, until the invention of the air pump, but that's a story for another day.

Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still are my two favorite movies from my childhood. I guess I find it utterly depressing that the bozos in hollywood need to re-create classics. "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!"

I don't think the problem is the screenwriters - I suspect it's the idiots who actually greenlight the various projects that need to go.

Yeah, but some of the scripts they come up with that actually make it out, I kind of wonder if the writers have any mind left at all ;)
