At one point I recall people complaining about this, claiming weird effects, broken apps, etc. Is this still the case or is it reasonably safe to upgrade to it?

I have done 50 machines at three different companies without any problems. Standard precautions apply as usual.

I've upgraded my notebook and desktop machines and had no problem. They are both older machines. I've also upgraded several machines when I was doing some (slumming) admin work between real jobs recently. No problem has been reported there either. CG may a different opinion. :-D

about 500 work machines and 6 failures, the rest all successes.

If you're updating a home-built machine, no worries. My laptop also seemed to take it well.

I have to say, with reference to our previous conversation, XP SP3 is one of the reasons I'm considering switching. Since I installed it I've just spent about 20% more time fixing things. Like my DVD drive disappearing. Just my experience...

I am not an Expert by any means , but It seems that any virus software you have installed in XP that protects any part of the operating system will not allow a good upgrade . I dont know if removing it will change anything. the problem is ,,,, this is an Observation now ,,, the changes in the operating system are widespread and massive , it makes XP almost like Vista. But not quite. however , My hard drive failed in My Old 1.6HP laptop and I installed Xp then upgraded to SP3 It now works fantastically . the Old virus and protection software will noit work I went to something New and better . The old software antivirus that is when it was upgraded to SP3 did not protect my computer . It also prevented a Complete installation of SP3. Which Left my Macine Vulnerable . Hope this Helps .learned by Doing. :-D

I don't know what kind of machine you tried it on, but all of my desktop boxes at home are home-built, and therefore do not use a "recovery disk" for OS re-install. I heard that the problem involves the overly generic installs that places like Dell/HP/etc use to gen their systems. I'm sure if you google it, you'll find the actual cause. And before you plunk down the cash on a Mac (expecting to code for Windows under a VM), you really should talk to Christian. It sounds to me like it's not that good of an idea.

I saw that post today actually. Definitely keeping my counsel for the moment. We'll see after a while, after all I'm not in any huge rush. I have one machine that's fairly stable, which, perhaps surprisingly, is my laptop, running Vista Sp1. ;P My desktop crashed again last night. it seems to be something to do with the media channels, as far as I can see. I imported a CD, all went well, and when I popped open the drive to remove it, I switched over to the recently added list to see the track on the HD, and clicked it to play. Track begins playing. I close CD drawer. Cue a deafening noise as the PC hung and repeated the same AC/DC snare-drum hit like a machine gun.... I've been getting more random crashes too, Blue Screen ones. No pattern that I can discern. Vexing. It's only a few months since I rebuilt the damn thing. My point about SP3 though, is that it was completely and utterly stable until I installed it through Windows Update. When I bought the machine, it had SP2. I reckon I'm going to have to admit defeat and rebuild the OS.

Coming WAY late to this thread, however ... I have updated 4 machines to Windows XP SP3 now, all XP Pro, two laptops and two desktops, all without a hitch. As for the "SP3 is faster and better" stuff people claim, well, I don't know about that; all seems the same to me. Windows XP is still the single most stable OS on the market, IMHO.

It seems to me that it is anti-virus related. Any upgrade that i did when i forgot to turn the av off went to hell. No problems on the boxes that had the av turned off at the time of the upgrade
